ANAEL
"Necromantic Rituals"
CD 75/100
Black Metal
Germany
One of my favorite Black Metal albums is "Worship Him" from Samael. Well, this "Necromantic Rituals" of Anael (sounds strangely enough like Samael, they probably are a source of inspiration, right?) is coming really close to it in my appreciation scale. People are not playing this kind of raw mid-tempo pure Black Metal anymore, but Anael prove me wrong and I'm very happy with that! I just love this doomy and extremely dark atmosphere. The music is as sharp and cold as an ice blast OK, it is not highly original; I need to agree with that. The guitar and drum sound is almost exactly the same as that of Samael in the early beginning; even the vocals are pretty similar to Vorphalack's more than ten years ago. But the compositions are very nice and catchy; the riffs are already spooking around in my head after having listened to this CD only twice. I would rank this album in between "Worship Him" and "Blood Rituals" (well well, another parallel??) of Samael, but very close to the former one, which is in my eyes the best one of the kind.

ARACHNES
"Primary Fear"
CD 85/100
Symphonic Power Metal
Italy
Don't judge a book by its cover, a wise man once said. Well, he's not always right. Arachnes's new full length is a prime example of this. A superb, dark fantasy cover is just the icing on this cake -15 slices in total. Primary Fear is their fourth full album in just under 3 years, which is not a bad batting average on any day, I'd say, especially considering this is far from assembly line, "press 1 for Power Metal" type of record. No, where the attractive cover grabs your attention, the first track "Osonzes" manages to keep it effortlessly with its majestic choirs. The following tracks are a bit more standard works, but with the coming of the seventh song, "To Escape Death" in tandem with" Tota Pulchra", which features a real church organ, the album reaches its zenith. This wonderful piece of arts closes with an enjoyable cover of E.L.P.'s Prog Rock classic, "Eruption". Forget your usual prejudices against Italian bands, this is really rather good, very good even.

RED SUN "Twisted Logic"
CD 85
Extreme Tech/Cyber Metal
Poland
Hey, another Vader clone? Nope! Atrophia Red Sun is most certainly labeled made in Poland, but in a way, they're coming from way farther... Actually, it's as if they come from some totally unexplored region of the Cosmos; the kind of place you can only imagine in your weirdest dreams... I've heard similar stuff already (Demimonde came right into my mind) but the Polish five-piece developed a very personal way of looking - and playing - Metal, so comparisons of any sort would be nonsense. Okay; their global approach will probably remind you of the early (yet futuristic) Nocturnus... Still, "Twisted Logic" carries a way airier sound that sets Atrophia Red Sun hundred percent apart from all the cyber-wannabe's that have been polluting the scene for the last metallic decade. This is the type of disc you want to stick right in your friends' faces saying "this one is good, fuck the rest". Unfortunately, it's not always an option. I hope they're in the right hands, because they need to spread their music to the masses... and I'm not talking about the underground public only...

"Orgasm"
CD 92
Progressive Schizo Metal
Norway
I feel quite bad. Like eaten up with guilt or something... 'Cause how the hell could I miss 'em? Damn it! I heard their exordium 7" EP many years ago and, though I clearly remember those very promising "rough" outlines, I never took some of my time to follow the band's career. Shame on me! Six years after that - probably "cult" now - vinyl release, I get to hear this masterpiece and now, my only wish is to find the rest of the Norwegians' discography! My job here is to make you understand with words how cool this album sounds. And believe me, it won't be easy... But I'll try of course. First, I must warn all the "true" Metal followers that this is no typical Metal record. I mean, it's Metal, but it's way more than that! In fact, Atrox is not the kind of band that stoops to compromise. There's absolutely no barrier for them and I think they know for a fact that they're not gonna please everyone with their XL-open-mindedness. Yet, they're sticking to it and I truly appreciate... In more concrete musical terms, one could describe this unique performance as a very modern Prog attempt. But again, words won't suffice to emphasize the nirvanesque inner-deviancy of the overall production, which is packed with profound madness, dreamy atmospheres and a sort of sweet insanity. Imagine Kate Bush who's had too much Xanax with heavy guitars and twisted rhythms in the background. Yeah, Sharon Den Adel has been surpassed. Pretty badly... Don't let this disc go; you may regret it!

BEYOND
INSPIRATION "A Tribute To Uli Jon Roth"
CD 83
Guitar Heroes
USA
SPV released Uli's excellent "Live At Castle Donington" about a year ago... And now, Lion Music gathered many musicians from their roster and issued this killer tribute album to (I quote) "one of the greatest and most influential yet shamelessly unknown musicians of our time". And, of course, I won't be the one who'll contradict such truth... So, who's in the box? I can't write down the whole list, but here's a useful summary of what you can expect from this disc (I'll actually tell you about my faves, in case you didn't guess yet...). Let's start with "Sails of Charon" with Joop Wolters' unbelievably fluid guitar playing and Lance King (Balance Of Power) on vocals. That is definitely one of the best! "Burning Wheel Turning" is pretty cool as well... Here you get Lance King again, but this time he's accompanied by Section A's guitarist, Torben Enevoldsen, who by the way shows killer skills... "Still So Many Lives Away" has a way dirtier sound but I truly like it a lot... It features Ian Haugland (Europe) on drums and James Byrd on the guitar and keyboards... Nice coupling! Another of my very faves is "Indian Dawn", which is performed by Winterlong's guitarist and mastermind, Thornbjörn Englund with - again - Lance King on vocals and Gerald Kloos on drums. And eventually, among the most "feisty" ones, you'll probably find the new version of "Polar Nights" pretty well performed, with genuine intensity and assurance. Uli's fans will buy this willingly. For the others: please display some curiosity...

BLACK
CANDLE "The Faceless Angel"
CD 64
Black Metal
Luxemburg
Luxemburg is small, yet it's apparently big enough to carry a few Metal bands. Among these, you'll find Black Candle whose raw and primitive Black Metal armor has been forged centuries ago in the depths of fuckin' darkness. You probably get the picture already, right? Yeah, these guys are damn evil! Now, the problem is that the malefic horde doesn't bring anything new. They're "authentic" and fans of True Black will undoubtedly appreciate their attitude, but the others will remain hungry. I have nothing against True Black but - to me - it must be performed perfectly to be praiseworthy. And unfortunately, it's not the case here... Technically, lots of little mistakes will perturb even the less exigent of the listeners. Take the drumming for example; it's quite efficient, but it definitely lacks precision. When you play so fast, more stick-control and sensitivity is required to make your kit groove! You can't just play the notes and don't give a rat's ass about the way they sound... The guitars do not sound perfect but way better for sure. On the other hand, they play nothing but classic basic riffs, so we would be on the heights of absurdity if they sounded wrong! About the recording, I suppose it was half-homemade or something. At least, that's the first impression you get when you put it in your player... Still, Black Candle seem to have a great potential. Thus, I sincerely hope they'll make a better use of it in the coming years...

MAJESTY "Sands of Time"
CD 90/100
Epic heavy metal
Australia
Press releases can be shamelessly bold sometimes. Choose, any one from the myriad of Italian Power Metal releases, each of which are the biggest sensation since Rhapsody, or so these self proclaimed Gods say. Luckily enough, once in a while these press releases tell the truth. Claiming to be the new heirs to Queensrÿche's rich, but now abandoned legacy of intricate Epic Metal hymns, it would be easy to slag off so pretentious a statement. However, with just a few notes into "Fall of the Reich" (no, subtlety is not one of their strong points), the premier track on "Sands of Time", that magic that made Queen of the Rÿche such a brilliant gem shines through with more than a mere sparkle of reminiscence here. Granted, they are still no more than followers of the Rÿche path, but until Geoff Tate and troops find their way again, this will do more than adequately.

BLINDED
COLONY "Divine"
CD 70/100
Melodic Death Metal
Italy
With Dark Tranquillity and In Flames seeking new musical paths, At the Gates disbanded and John Nodtsveidt still behind bars - for the time being that is- the Melodic Death Metal banner of Gothenburg was passed on to legions of ambitious, sometimes overzealous newcomers. On the one hand this led to a certified adulation and rather conservative preservation of the legendary Gothenburg sound: Infernal Gates, Teatre or the excruciating Gates of Ishtar. On the other hand you have a much diversified palette where each band chips in its own little bit of innovation. Think for instance of Children of Bottom or Arch Enemy. Blinded Colony keeps the middle ground in this. Starting out on a much more Gothic level under the monniker Stigmata, their new found name brought in very melodic, smooth but aggressive slabs of Death, more or less in the same vein as Hypocrisy around "The Final Chapter" or "Hypocrisy" era. In particular the grunts and screams are a dead ringer for Peter Tatgren. In the end then, Blinded Colony's worth should be measured according to their ability to write a good tune rather than their revolutionary properties.

"Prey On Life"
CD 85
Emotional Metalcore
USA
This one is not the kind of disc you can just put away neatly in your collection once you've bought it. Unless you have very dirty ears... Because this new Relapse release has been created to spin for hours, days and months in your player and eventually make your speakers melt under the weight of despair. Featuring Nasum's bassist, Jesper Liveröd, Burst's "Prey On Life" explores a quite impressive variety of harmonies and dark atmospheres. Many open chords give the sonic texture a certain wideness and emphasize the Punk/Core edge, though they never make the record sound "happy". On the contrary... Every single riff feels like a stab wound in your chest. And the more the band adds groove with its rhythm section, the more you feel like you're being sucked deep into a vortex where your body becomes a big lump of panic and depression. Sometimes, vocals are clean and soft and they help bring some warmth in this icy yet damn emotive music. Generally though, they're aggressive and confused in a way... So, there's no real escape here... Just face it; you'll have to deal with your very true self... Good luck!

CONDITION
RED "II"
CD 71
Progressive Metal
International
The guys all stayed for another album. All but Derek Sherinian... What a shame! Fortunately, Alexander King is clever with his hands too, so the general Condition Red sound remains quite the same. It's still Neoclassical-oriented Prog Metal with lots of wanking and Fusion stuff. And yeah, Ella Grussner still brings her very special touch here. I'm actually not so sure that she's a good singer - I'm sorry to say so, but some mistakes can't just be ignored - but she's certainly good at playing both the violin and the flute... As for Alex Masi, he only did a couple of solos here and there and the main guitarist is still Lion Music's boss, Lars Eric Mattsson, whose feeling on this album is truly excellent. Eventually, I must say that my favorite tracks are the instrumental ones. And not just because I don't like Ella's performance that much. It's just that the instrumentals sound really different from the rest. "The Eagle's Return" for example shows great synth/guitar duets and... the song is just catchy as hell! "Seven Stars" is pretty cool too; a very strange one. Actually, it has a sort of Jungle/Fusion beat that makes the groove really special. It reminds me of some Ozric Tentacles in a way... And for an outro, you get a very nice synth-based piece, "Out Of The Red", which unfortunately ends very fast... All in all, I'd say it's a good album...

CORNFLAMES
"The Farewell Drive"
CD 75/100
Emo Rock
Belgium
After their debut album in 2000, this Emo Pop Rock formation released their second album "Farewell Drive" on Funtime Records. Cornflames is definitely one of the better home grown bands. Therefore they deserved to be on the bigger festivals and in a lot of clubs over the past few months and years. This second album is an improvement compared to the previous one, also due to the fact that the second guitarist sings on the album as well. Now they combine one slightly hoarse voice with a regular one. For this album, Cornflames focused completely on the song writing process. They've got some nice melodies, but I think they play a bit too linear, using the same accords over and over again. Nevertheless, this is a very decent album on which you'll be able to relax.

CD 76/100
Pop Punk
Belgium
Gas Guzzlin' Girls? Doesn't that sound familiar to you? Of course it does! It's the title of Wölf's first full album, but they had to change their name, and re-released their album with their new formation "Cranck". So, what's new about this album? Actually pretty much nothing. You'll find the same songs of their previous album and one extra song, which is the best on the album I think, next to "Why Didn't You Call Me". So that promises for the next album Otherwise, if you were familiar with Wölf, you'll certainly know that their Pop/Punk is catchy and emotional in a certain way. It's not a spectacular band; there are some better bands in our tiny little country, but they're quite all right. I think the new band name and the better artwork of the cover will certainly benefit the band's reputation. This is decent stuff

CUSTOM
MADE SCARE "The Show Must Go Off"
CD 56/100
Cowpunk
U.S.A
I'll be completely honest with this album of Custom Made Scare: they've got a very particular style (that, I've got to admit), which can be labeled as their own brand of trucker cow Punk, but that's kind of it. Either you'll hate it or you'll love it. It's that simple. If we had to compare this genre with the well known genres, this would be the "country" version of Punk Rock music. They even sing about truckers in Texas! That says it all. And although I tried to listen to this album, even a couple of times, I can't keep my concentration going on this music. This album is just a little too repetitive and I'm tempted to use the word "boring". I'm sure some of you like this genre of music and I can respect that, but I'm truly sorry, I even prefer the real "country" music in a way.

"Herald Of Doom"
demo CD-R 85
Mystical Folkish Black/Death
Belgium
Apparently, there's no damn possible way back anymore for LSP, so all that is left to say is "rest in peace, my dear" Fortunately enough, most of the bands that were signed on the small Belgian underground label are still very much alive, like Dagorlad that released the awesome "The End Of The Dark Ages" a couple of years ago and that just recorded a new 3-track promo entitled "Herald Of Doom", which is meant to get the band a new record deal. Now, what can I say about the new songs? Well, they're still in the pure Dagorlad vein for sure Yet, the first thing I noticed here is the very strong Folk touch. It certainly wasn't absent on the band's previous recordings, but it seems to be even more emphasized than before With that said, the general Dagorlad trademark has remained quite the same, with the typical medieval feel that features all sort of flutes, barrel organs, epic timpani and - most essential - a very mystical atmosphere that subtly combines the strength of Metal and the intensity of traditional jigs. Most parts actually sound like they were captured from "Lord Of The Rings", but who disliked that fucking movie? No one I guess So, if these tunes are worthy of being compared with Peter Jackson's art, don't you think they're worth an award as well? I certainly do

Just by looking at the cover of this album, I felt like a big shiver running down my spine. I may be very sensitive to cold, but at least I was warned by my precious sixth sense - I knew for sure that this CD was gonna be a real torture for those who like warm and sensitive atmospheres. Now, honestly, it's not as primitive as I expected it either, because what I foresaw was actually some sort of Dark Throne copycat with a strong Moscow accent and an even rougher sound (yeah, I know it's pretty hard to obtain ). But I eventually had to admit that I wasn't such a good soothsayer after all... In fact, some guitar tricks make Der Gewelt's songs very melodic in a way. Nevertheless, we're clearly dealing with an evil sort of Black Metal band. But there's no doubt about the fact that they have something special to show. Members of Rossomahaar took part in this glorious escapade; I'm not surprised anymore as they know for sure how genuine Black Metal has to sound Nice catch again, Mr. Rage Of Achilles!

CD 89/100
Death Metal

Re-releases of old demos are often little more than a self-indulgent whim of the band or one label's scrupulous capitalization on their success. Great was my astonishment to hear these old recordings of a time when Devilyn still went under the name Cerebral Concussion as they represent some of the finest Death I've heard this side of Anaal Nathrakh. Tracks like "The Rule" or the slumbering "Into Centuries" are very raw, Brutal Death Metal concoctions, like a nastier version of Behemoth. Although the production here is a tad off here and there, it actually enhances the songs, giving them a more brutal, evil sound. Really, on the basis of their old material alone, they can easily rank alongside their compatriots Vader and the aforementioned Behemoth. Besides the demo material, this disc is graced with a cover of Carcass's "Heartwork" and even a video track of "Born Again" from their first album.

"The Sixth Dimension"
CD 91/100
Melodic Power Metal
Germany
Well, what a surprise this is! I didn't know this band at all but damn, this is good. They've been around a long time (first record "Our Kingdom" dates from 1986), but after a long break they decided to start again in 2001. Now their style is a little bit different from back in the 80's, but that's a normal thing after all these years. Anyway, what they have created here is quite impressive. It starts whit a super song and it just continues till the end. First song, called "World Gone Crazy" starts with a killer riff and then turns into a great song with a marvelous piano-piece near the end before repeating the chorus for the last time. Next song to come up is titled "Your Favourite Curse". This is a rather fast song with a cool chorus and musical parts. The third song "King's Tears" has a strange intro (which will be repeated throughout the entire song), a normal structure, but the chorus is - strangely indeed - a very much Rhapsody-like sing-along part, and then there is also a bluesy solo in it. After this comes a nice ballad called "One Perfect Moment", to be followed by the very fast "Burning Red". All the other songs are rather impressive too, but because it would take to much time to tell all the details I'll just finish telling you that this record is so full of variation and excellent music ("Time Machine", "Skylighter", "Last Exit Moon" , ) it's really worth buying. And those who can lay their hands on the digipack version will also discover a cover of Aerosmith's "Rats In The Cellar" and a bonus video of "Charade" - a song from their previous record "The Artefact".

"Immortal Stories"
CD 70/100
Epic Power Metal
Greece
This tale starts out truly memorable indeed: for once, the intro does not constitute a pseudo atmospheric piano piece, a melancholic Spanish guitar or an O Fortuna clone. "Immortal Stories" begins with a massive, concrete Doom riff that slowly swells into the thundering Epic "Holy Sword". This sets the tone for a decent, at times maybe somewhat formulaic album of pure, undiluted Greek Heavy Metal. In any case: this is not a rush job. Like Jack Starr's new project, "Guardians Of The Flame", this Cult Metal Classics release, may be made with limited means - no Finnvox production for these Hellenics - but it is audibly done with love and care. The generic, but attractive Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer cover is just one example.

If I wasn't so comfortably installed in my chair, I would probably jump and mess my place up, because these guys definitely know what the word groove stands for... And that makes my adrenaline-level go totally mad! In fact, Escualo like to mix Nu Metal with lots of weird Funky/Psychedelic elements. And the hybridization works just perfectly... Technically also, the Chileans seriously kick ass! On "Ritual", one can clearly hear the Jazzy/Latino influences in the drumming, which make the music more complex without killing the melody. Killer! And the crazy vocal scansion makes the whole thing even more rhythmic. Plus, the singer sings in Spanish, which adds lots of color to his performance... Good choice! I think this is a band that fully deserves to be praised for both their originality and their artistic skills. This album is a must-buy; you should know this! I really hope Escualo will find the necessary means to make their band known around the globe, because it would be too bad if they just hung about in the underground scene for a couple of years before they eventually just vanish into smoke leaving no trace but this fantastic CD they sent me. You thought Tool was the best one of God's creations? Well, have a listen to Escualo; they may change your mind in the blink of an eye...

Gore Metal

The new Exhumed brings us back to the glorious Carcass years, to that same period wherein a couple of Death Metal bands had finally found the perfect cross between brutality, sickness and accessibility. "Anatomy Is Destiny", whose extreme gory concept was recently swept away by the German censorship fuckers, is indeed one of those few classy albums that carries intensity, technique and - oddly in a way - sensibility at the same time. First thing you'll notice when you'll play the disc is the very "Swedish" guitar sound, which will unavoidably remind you of the most genuine Death Metal productions of the nineties. In a flash, enter the vocals with the typical Grind/Gore duets featuring a very deep growling voice and another one that has a way harsher and higher timbre. Well, I guess you all heard Exhumed once, so I'm gonna stop with the silly decortications... Instead, I'd rather emphasize that the new songs are absolutely perfectly constructed, with the very right riffs, a hellish feel and the vilest intent. This slice is more about musical alchemy than butchery, believe me...

CD 82
Grind/Gore/Death
Australia/USA
Like "The Battle Of The Titans", this split-CD represents a piece of epic brutality that will (or at least should) remain engraved in every sickhead's mind. The first onslaught is launched by the Australian barbaric hordes of Fuck... I'm Dead. And there we go with eight tracks of pure aural massacre lead by unbelievably frantic (unfortunately synthetic) drumming, down tuned yet very cut-edge guitars and the classic yet efficient as ever grunt/scream vocal duet. A pleasant torture though... With those whom survived, we can go on with Engorged from the USA. Here, the sound gets a lot darker, more underground and therefore a little less clear; the overall production sometimes reminds me of the old Terrorizer demos. With a heavier Death Metal intention maybe. Some songs feature amusing riffs, like "Death Metal Attack 2000", but all in all, it's just good Grind/Death... You can't expect anything more. Why would you anyway?

My my my... there have been some great releases this summer and after summer, including this fabulous new album from Glasseater. Victory records is doing a great job and creating a new image signing a majority of post Emo Hardcore bands. What's great about this one is just the simplicity of making an excellent album. All they needed for this is their experience and their own way of playing. And the members being from diverse ethnicities added extra color to the sound. This isn't just the typical Emo Hardcore album. There's not a lot of screaming; only when they want to put more emphasis on a song part, they often use a double pedal; they build there songs up to a climax; they're very melodic; they play kind of Pop Punk in a darker way; they introduce some Punk Rock elements... All in all, they've done a great job at it. The album also contains interesting enhanced footage. If you trust the Victory quality, you don't have to hesitate about this one.

"Godiva"
CD 88/100
Heavy Power Metal
Switzerland
Hell Yeah! What a killer record this is, the debut of these Swiss metalheads. Although the band has only just existed from the beginning of 2001, they came up with a very strong record in my opinion. The music they make is Heavy Power Metal in the vein of Primal Fear and Judas Priest, but they are not simply copies of them. Godiva add some of their own elements and that's a good thing. First of all there is the excellent singer whose reminds me of Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), with a touch of Rob Halford and David Lee Roth (ex-Van Halen). His singing is aggressive with high screams, a lot of power and variation. But a good singer alone doesn't make a good Metal band. There is also the need of some great guitars, bass and drums. Luckily all of this can be found in Godiva. The guitarists spit out some cool heavy riffs and fluent solos without losing the structure of the songs. Finally there's another pumping rhythm section to support the lot. Now something about the songs on this record. They start with an intro, to be followed by the song "Razorblade Romantic". This song shows very well what Godiva stands for: pumping rhythms, powerful singing and a smooth solo. Then comes the song with the very original title "Heavy Metal Thunder". Don't worry, it's a good song though. Other more than good songs worth mentioning are "One Shot", "Nightmare", "Cold Blood", "Riding Through Time" and "Bullshit Lover". "One Shot", "Where Angels Die" and "Riding Through Time" are songs that would fit just fine on a Primal Fear/Sinner record also. "Cold Blood" is a little bit slower than the other songs, but that's a good thing to me because of the variation it brings. Finally "Bullshit Lover" brings us a mixture of Primal Fear (sound), AC/DC (structure and riffs) and Van Halen (voice and sound). So, when you put all of this together you'll discover a fine band, with a lot of possibilities for the future.

GRABAK
"The Serpent Within Paradise"
CD 70/100
Black Metal
Germany
"The Serpent Within Paradise" is already the third Grabak full album released by CCP records. According to the press sheet this CD should be more varied and eventful than the previous ones. I personally thought that this CD was pretty monotonous and did not really have spirit. Don't get me wrong, it's not that bad; it's excellent in background, but when you listen to it carefully, it's pretty difficult to stay focused. Exception here is the last track "Epilogue", which has excellent riffs and really wakes you up. I really liked that one. Unfortunately, this track is very short. Maybe, it's the prelude of Grabak's different style, which I would encourage. What else? Well, as can be deduced from the CD title, the main theme of this album is the adventures of Adam and Eve and some reptile in the gardens of Eden; the story revisited by Grabak. This tale seems not to be rich enough for filling one full CD, so some songs deal about other stuff too like e.g. "Saxonia" or "Lillith". I quite liked the lyrics, for your information, some are in German, some in English. Well, I only found out by actually wanting to read them! The singing is OK, but does not really invite you to want to understand the words of the singer (here we go agaaaaaiiinnnn .). This is not really a problem; it's actually quite common in Black Metal. All taken into consideration, this new work from Grabak is for sure not revolutionary and can therefore be ranked as Black Metal with an average score.

Classic Heavy Metal

Some of you still have a recollection of a time where classic Heavy Metal was just called Metal. Then you might also recall Virgin Steele's sophomore album "Guardians Of The Flame". Now their former guitar player, Jack Starr, got together with some of his old buddies under this moniker. As you would expect it is indeed very much a continuation of Virgin Steele's heyday. Even though "Under A Savage Sky" is the first release of this band; it has none of the characteristics of a typical debut with all members being steel veterans for about 20 years or so: Jack Starr with Burning Starr and, of course, Virgin Steele and for instance, Joe Hasselvander from cult Doom act Pentagram. Sadly enough there is nigh a trace of Doom to be found on the record. Still there are many things to mire here: Starr's trademark soloing and often Bluesy, even Gary Moorish guitar work is a joy for the ear. Take a listen for instance at "Anthem For The Nations" or the title track, which bears more than a slight resemblance to "Over The Hills And Far Away". Ear candy.

"Sanguine"
CD 75
Alternative Rock/Metal
Germany
Man, you're gonna like the lady on this cover! But there's one thing I'd like to say before you guys misunderstand the whole "concept"... Harmful really didn't need a slutty blonde in such an indecent (yet very cool) position on their cover to make their album worth the buying... In fact, their music alone is definitely good enough to get the band's name in the charts... Now, if I had to talk about originality, it would make me uncomfortable, because the German trio doesn't bring anything new, but what I can say is that "Sanguine" is a pretty intense album that shows excellent composing skills. A couple of songs even set apart from the rest, sounding like "hits" like "Overfed" - the main riff on that one is a true moneymaker. "Black Rain" is also a killer song... And the calmer songs you'll find in the middle of the album ("I Remember You" and "Desert Of Mistakes") carry an awesome aura as well... Maybe the album sounds a tad linear in general, but I'm sure no one will say it's not worth the detour...

HATEPULSE
"In Extenso Letalis"
MCD 78
Brutal Black Metal
Norway
CDs that carry the label Rage Of Achilles are rarely a disappointment. And this new one is no exception. Hatepulse play Brutal Black Metal; they're Norwegian, they're smothered in powder and blood, they look hundred percent evil and you really don't want to encounter them late at night - especially not in a desert alley... Well, they're all like this, I know... But Hatepulse are unique though, because they always have those little pluses in their songs that render them totally different from your average Black Metal tune. On "The Cynical Aftermath" for example, you can find discrete yet definitely present atmospheric keyboard elements, while "God Of Hypocrisy" features a nearly Viking riffing style that makes the song really attractive from a melodic viewpoint. Still, my fave remains "Dodsferd", the fifth and last track of this MCD, because of its intelligent construction that imposes very nice contrasts between straightness and a sort of atmospheric menace that is ready to storm from the ever grey skies of dusk and turn every life form into shit. Wow... Isn't it scary?

Thrash/Black Metal
Germany
Even though you are used to listening to Metal for many years, there are still some bands of whom you know they exist (I always thought that the band's logo is one of the nicest I ever saw) but you actually never listened to their music for one or another dark reason. For me, Impending Doom is one of those. Getting to review their new double album "Beyond The Altar Of Obscurity", I finally had the chance to know them a little better. And what's better than an album covering the whole 10 years of the band's existence? This double CD contains about 30 tracks, recorded during rehearsals as well as live or in the studio. Three video tracks will give you an idea of how they look and perform live. The music brought by Impending Doom is much diversified. When you look at their influences (this CD contains covers of Slayer, Darkthrone, Morbid Angel and Celtic Frost) you get an idea of what Impending Doom brings. Their music is really melodic, sometimes very slow and doomy, yet another time fast and sharp as lightning! Impending Doom has a very specific sound, carried mainly by the heavy guitar sound. The growls and screams of singer Andreas Kaufmann fit the music perfectly (at least in my opinion). The overall sound is more than acceptable, the difference in sound going from rehearsal sessions or live tracks to studio tracks did not disturb me that much, which is a very good sign. In conclusion, this double CD is just perfect for discovering the band, like it was the case for me. I guess, the Impending Doom die-hard fans will also appreciate it, since this album also contains some rare tracks. Let them continue for another 10 years, I promise I will pay more attention and follow their work from now on!

demoMCD 78
Multifaceted Metal
The Netherlands
Mesmeric afro-tribal tam-tamming on top of the regular drumming, groovy, fat and incisive Thrashy riffs, a generally rather somber ambiance and a very raspy yet totally clear and expressive vocal performance is what this new demo is made of. I mean, mainly Because Incoming are definitely not the kind of guys who just piece parts together to eventually come out with a song. Here, one senses there's been a lot of thinking behind each transition, each arrangement, each note actually and the result is pretty nice and - most of all - rather original! I believe we're all sick of the soprano Snow Whites from the Netherlands, so this is a genuine relief Now, I can't say either that Incoming has recorded the demo of the year. That would be overdoing it Still - in the underground scene - I think they deserve to be at least checked out because they're not just another band for sure Keep an eye out for them!

Iron Ware is another fine band on the LMP-label, which stands for quality Heavy Metal. These young Swedes make really good Metal in the vein of Edguy, Hammerfall and friends, but mostly they reminded me of Freternia (a less known Swedish Power Metal band). After a few searches on the net I found out that Pasi Humppi (vocals) also is/was the vocalist of Freternia Together with the virtuosity of the guitar players and the strong rhythm section, he stands for a strong debut-CD that promises a lot for the future. It starts right away with the second song (after the obligatory intro). This song, called "Holy Man" is an outstanding song, just as "Dark Sun", "Time Machine", "Sanctuary" and the title track, but the other songs are almost as good as well. All this and a great production by Andy LaRoque make this a must-hear (and eventually buy) CD. Hope to hear from Iron Ware soon again!

IRREVERENCE
"Target: Hate"
CD 72/100
Death Thrash
Italy"
Irreverence actually do their name little credit as they quite openly revere the Death and Thrash legends of the past two decades. Absorbed by rather technical Death Metal, the most likely reference points are Death (whose "Pull The Plug" they cover), Slayer and old Sepultura. With them coming from Italy, it's nice to hear something else than Rhapsody wannabes for a change. Also, even though this is a small release without the backing of any label, the sound quality is decent really, which is paramount to this type of Death Metal. Necro can sound like shite, but there's no point in showing your musicianship if it's all fuzzed out through a poor mix. Adding then a calculated balance between complexity and the attention span of the average listener, makes a pretty good record indeed.

Drunken Heavy/Rock'n'Roll

Yoo-hoo! I can smell the stink of strong booze, old crackled latrines and moist tobacco in each note that these undomesticated Vikings play. Really! Their music makes me think of the mighty American Dog and sometimes, it even sounds like some good early Maiden. However, the vocal performance has a very rough and angry edge that makes the album sound even harsher and which makes all comparisons with Kaptain Sun look somewhat unjust. I won't say they're one hundred percent original, but at least, they're fuckin' real! Now, if you're into refined shredding, stylish arrangements and stuff, feel reasonable enough to pass your way because these guys are absolutely sober. Oops, sorry; I think I made use of a rather perilous adjective Let's say they're basic; this one shouldn't lead to more droll mix-ups! Hum hum Well, I guess you're clever enough not to have the highest intellectual expectations of this CD. Whatever Just grab a bottle opener and some beers; you may enjoy this anyway!

Lawrence Arms is one of the revelations of the last years. I've got to admit I wasn't very fond of them in the early years, but since their debut on Fat Wreck I've been appreciating their music more and more. Now, with their second release on this same label, I think they've made a hell of a record. My love for this band started since I've seen them play live a few times. These days, it's very difficult to make music as a three-piece, but Lawrence Arms show it's totally possible, starting with the two totally different but harmonious vocal styles, which go well on the distant melodies they put on each and every other song. Just compare the songs "The March Of The Elephants", which is my favorite, and their following track "Chapter 13: The Hero Appears". It says it all. This album has got lots of various songs, but all recognizable in their own style. I'd say that I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this album. You won't get tired of it, that's a promise.

Apart from their quite funny mirror-name, Lebocat don't bring anything new in the Melodic Rock scene. Their music is clean; structures are catchy, the songs are well executed, but this is a little too déjà vu to my liking... With that said, one must admit that the guys are all very talented musicians! Joey Cimino's drumming apparently didn't loose its power and precision through his 20 year-long career. In the past, the young skin-beater played with well-known artists like Mark Farmer of Grand Funk Railroad, Danny DeLaRosa of Babylon A.D. and Eric Martin of Mr. Big. By the way, Eric also participated in the recording of "Flo's Barbershop"... Later, Joey formed his own project, The Tops; some of you may have heard of it... And now he's back with Jonathan Reyes and Jack Grossman, who are both very experienced shredders. Still, the trio sound a tad too outdated... Now, Lebocat could still be a revelation to certain people. To those whom never heard Van Halen, for example. The rest may enjoy this record but they surely won't be surprised...

Some of you may think that SPV waste a lot of plastic, but this - again double - CD release is a really nice and, most of all, interesting item for all Life Of Agony fans. Recorded during the band's couple of reunion shows at Irving Plaza in New York, "River Runs Again" features the original LOA line-up. That means you get Keith Caputo on vocals, Joey Z. on guitars, Alan Robert on bass and Sal Abruscato on drums. Maybe you didn't notice so much time had passed by, but it's been six years since those four have been seen together! Damn, I feel old! Whatever... At the end of the second disc, you also get three bonus tracks featuring LOA's members current projects. The first one is Alan Robert's Among Thieves. Sounds cool... Maybe a touch too "happy" for me, but it's still OK... The next one is Keith Caputo's solo project. This one is pretty weird... I bet you won't recognize the LOA trademark... Last but not least, my fave: "Fake" by Supermassiv (feat. Sal Abruscato). This new band is worth the detour for sure! Check it out! Let's get back to the subject... "River Runs Again" includes all the best LOA songs: "This Time", "Weeds" and many more... The overall production is clean and Caputo's vocals sound rusty but never disappointing, I swear... I found this nice DVD in my mailbox exactly one week after I got the homonymous double CD from SPV and I must say it was quite a nice surprise because I enjoyed the audio-live a lot, so having the band on my screen was just the best I could ever expect! Strangely (maybe), the set-list is the same than the one you can find on the double audio CD, so there's nothing special to add about the songs themselves... Still, seeing the band instead of just hearing them is absolutely great! Especially since the concert was very well filmed and the atmosphere is really cool: powerful and warm at the same time. Even intimate I'd say... Synchronization is totally OK and though you clearly notice there have been overdubs here and there, it doesn't loose the very fresh feeling that the now Stoner-styled Caputo and his mates (can't say ex-mates, sorry, it's too compact for me to imagine them as separated elements) created here. As a bonus, you'll find a couple of short yet kind interviews with each band member, a photo gallery, the band's bio and disco, subtitles... In case you're still wondering "am I gonna buy the CD or the DVD?", I suggest you buy the DVD... Unless you're not the sad and broke person that I am; then you can buy both...

Metallic Guitar
The Netherlands
Baptizing your disc "Guitartalk" is pretty audacious. It can even be misinterpreted and understood as an unwarranted sign of superiority and arrogance. But I swear on my killer new Tigger figurine that Marcel Coenen definitely can assume his title. After 20 years of fret flattening, he's become one hundred and ten percent able to make his guitar express itself through his fingers. We're thus not talking about technique anymore, yet about amazing feel. Be they presto, allegro or verycoolo, all of Marcel's songs are source of beauty and expressiveness. Part of his playing can remind you of Steve Vai's classics (especially tunes like "Inner Alchemy") but the Dutch guitarist forged his very own sound, which now includes great harmonic variety and - most of all - musical flexibility. Also, he puts lots of Ron Thal-esque crazy interventions in the garum and that brings even more movement to the album. The only shame is that awful drum machine... that is sooo cheap! Anyway, I'm really looking forward to hearing Marcel's band (Sun Caged), whose album should be out soon... On Lion Music of course...

For those who already know MFATGG, I don't need to tell you they're a cover band and that they started this band just for fun. Well, things got serious over the years, and here they are with their fourth album in 6 years "Take A Break". Well, there's nothing else to it except covers and this album has got a total ancient R&B touch, with tracks from Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, R. Kelly, Prince and others. I'm sure you'll recognize all the songs if you know something about music. It's a typical MFATGG album and I think that's kind of a disappointment to me, because it's more of the same. Having this album, or their previous ones, is pretty much the same to me. I think it's amusing and funny - that I do - but I don't see why somebody should have all of their records unless they're a big fan of course. And on the first albums it was very funny to hear them shout "Yeah" at the end of the songs all the time, but they kept on doing this and now I think it also kind of lost its magic. But it still remains something typical for this band on the other hand. If this is the first time you buy one of their albums I think you'll find this amusing. Otherwise, well, you see my point...

Like many Metalheads, I've always been allergic to Rap and all related styles. With both time and the arrival in full force of Nu Metal, I first - nearly unavoidably - strengthened my hatred against them, but strangely - unconsciously again - I eventually opened myself to a couple of Rap/Metal hybrids and began to appreciate them. Call me brainwashed, I don't care... Fact is that it's not the rap itself that I appreciate in bands such as Meschalina but the whole musical ensemble. Moreover, when you hear such stuff, you can't deny that the melodies are strong, that the songs groove like hell and that the overall feeling is anything but unpleasant. So, concretely, what we get here is a band that sounds a bit like Linkin Park without being just another copycat though. Key songs are way too numerous to mention them all and, when all is said and done, the only thing one can feel unhappy with is the short duration of the disc. We definitely need more than just 20 minutes of Mechalina...

Three years after their last release "Gateways To Annihilation", Morbid Angel is back, this time as a trio (as Erik Rutan left the band to focus on Hate Eternal only), with their brand new album "Heretic". The first 6 tracks of this CD are fast and furious, with the typical Morbid Angel sound we have all known for years now. Every Morbid Angel fan will find his personal favorites in here, no question about that. These are followed by two instrumental intermezzos, the first one "Place Of Many Death" is pretty heavy and scary; "Abyssous" is actually very calm. These are followed by two other typical Morbid Angel tracks, with "God Of Our Own Divinity" being the more mid-tempo track on the CD. I guess that the opinions about the last four tracks will be much more diversified. I think that most Death Metal fans won't want to have anything to do with them and will consider them CD filling material. I personally quite like the two instrumental tracks - especially the march; I both tracks really have spirit. But then again, I really hate drum solos (I always did ), and the guitar solo "Born Again" at the very end isn't that inspiring either Well, you better judge for yourself.

Do we always need to look at the back of a CD and check if it's been released on a big label when we're looking for some good music? I know some people do it instinctively and that may be an excuse, but still I think it's a pretty bad habit, because avoiding self-produced CDs (or even demo CD-Rs) can make you fail to spot some really classy bands. One of them is Nadir, who recently recorded this new demo that I've loved since the very first audition I remember the previous one lacked definition, but this one sounds great. Musically, there has been a clear evolution as well. Influences from well-known bands such as Paradise Lost, Amorphis, The 69 Eyes etc. couldn't be buried very deeply under the New-Wavy sound, yet there seems to be quite a thick layer of personality covering them and I would even dare to think that Nadir have found their very own sound with these five new songs. Another thing I need to mention is that we're not dealing with musicians who cherish complexity for complexity's sake. I definitely hear that they're skilled but they seem to prefer catchiness to wanking - and they're damn right! Stick Malmsteen on this CD and he'll fuck up the whole mood, you'll see Now, let's hope there will be a label knocking at their door soon If I had the money, I wouldn't hesitate!

Like most of the bands in their beginning years, None More Black had their part of bad luck, constantly changing line-ups, but they managed to survive and thanks to a demo song on their website, Fat Wreck Chords got in touch with them and got thrilled by their new material. Why? Because None More Black has got personality, I guess. They play melodic Punk Rock with a little twist of Hardcore, in an old school kind of way. The singer's hoarse voice makes their music a bit particular, but his voice is a little to linear in my opinion. Never the less, his voice is very recognizable and adds an extra touch to the music. I think their songs are well composed but I'm getting a bit tired with them. It's a pity, but I don't think I will listen to this album much, although I think plenty of you will love it. I just think most of their songs are more of the same - 14 of them - short and fast, except for the songs "Drop The Pop" and "The Affiliates". I simply thought "they can't do any better!". But they didn't fuck anything up... At all! "Soundchaser" is even better than "Unity"! Seriously! Strange how some bands have the amazing ability to renew their inspiration while most just fade into mediocre repetitions... Well, of course, Rage still make use of the good classic happy melodies, but only a few songs actually sound "exaggerated". The rest is nothing but a mass of genuine Metal sounds that melt together and form a solid war-noise that grooves through your speakers sometimes breaking them to pieces. Or something like that... Anyway, this is the genre of album that will undoubtedly bring out the rock star in you (many will probably find themselves messing around with a broom and headbanging in front of a mirror...). Apart from the musical dimension, one can - if one's interested in something more - also discover the whole "Soundchaser" concept, which is a great piece of science-fiction where Rage allied all of their imaginative talent to create a very nice storyboard... Where a lot of Gothic Metal is based around vampires or other scantily clad creatures, Sacriversum takes a whole other approach. Their records are concept albums about one or the other famous artist, like the previous "Becketia" or their latest effort, "Mozartia", based around the life and art of notorious gangster Moe Zart. Technically speaking, Sacriversum is not really Gothic Metal neither. Their recipe is much more inspired by Obituary or other mid tempo Death to which they added their own flavor of synths and the archetypical beauty and the beast vocals. Sadly enough I cannot be to enthusiastic about their newcomer Kate's singing. As she is new to the band, maybe she needs some more experience to broaden her vocal range. Fine, not everybody can be expected to have Tarja's properties (she of Nightwish), but a bit more confidence on her side would do the end result no harm. Still I do applaud their novel take on the Gothic genre.

Poland
"Dark Fields of Pain" - subtitled "Music for the pain generation" - is the first full CD of the Polish band Serpentia. This is another good release by Metal Mind Productions, which seems to be an unavoidable institution for Metal music in Poland. Back to Serpentia now. Before, in 2000, they released an MCD, " And The Angels Descended The Earth", in which the characteristic Serpentia style already was defined. Interesting compositions with dominant heavy 7-string guitars, technical riffs, double vocals ranging from Death grunts and screams to whispering, without forgetting the soundtrack-like passages. Serpentia clearly tries and succeeds in creating atmospheric songs. "Hospice Of Hope" is a slow and breathtaking song putting you in a certain state of mind, but all of this is immediately afterwards shattered by the very raw and heavy song "Charity Of Death", bringing you back to the "sad" reality. The main theme in the intriguing and disturbing lyrics (especially those of Ivy) is indeed suffering, with suicide as a possibility, which is considered to put an end to pain. Not so happy thoughts I would say, but they fit perfectly (or are a logical result of) the rather dark and cold atmosphere around Serpentia. The last track "Place Where Souls Are Dying" is really the sherry on the cake. Very beautiful, but also venomous I suggest you put on some happy music after that; it is not recommended to spend the rest of the day with this kind of thoughts spinning around in your head, especially when you're in a bad mood

Since the guys officially disbanded back in 1995, leaving their killer Barbie-boy singer behind them, I don't know if some die-hard fans kept the Skid Row flame burning or if they just switched idols... Still, fact is that I hear this new album now and all I can say is that talent is certainly not something they lost over the years... They still kick some serious ass! Now, Johnny Solinger may not be as cute as Sebastian Baaaaaach (damn, my pants are wet!?), but he's fucking good at his task! And the same thing goes for Phil Varone, who's definitely a great skin beater... Yet, the greatest thing here is that the essence has remained unchanged. I can feel the same intensity in Rachel Bolan's and Snake Sabo's writing as before. Well, maybe they shouldn't have readapted the classic ballad "I Remember You" and get it nearly twice as fast as the original version, but - that crazy idea apart - I think when you'll listen to "Thickskin", you'll automatically feel transported back in time, at the origin of the band... Having Sonata Nocturna in your player is like eating pancakes when you get up in the morning. Let me explain the metaphor First the sugar stimulates your papillae - then, after a short while, you slowly begin to get used to the sweet tickling that electrifies your palate, exactly as if some microscopic thorn-shaped ants were juggling with your taste to eventually (and fortunately) procure you some sort of a very pleasant feel. Yet, after another while, you start realizing that all that you've been eating may not be that safe for your health. And that's where you've reached the critical point - the point where you ask yourself "was this really good?". The coherent answer would be "yes" because if you eat so much of something you don't like, you must be a true masochist Still, I myself keep some doubts about this deduction. Because I really enjoyed the four tracks (three actually, plus an outro...) though I usually don't like such Doomy pseudo Neo-Classical Metal with a female soprano At all! There it is... Sun Caged's first official full-length follows Marcel Coenen's excellent solo album and, just as I expected, the result is nothing but another truly nice piece of Prog art! Again, Marcel shows great creativity but this time, his band mates came to his assistance generating even more power, intensity and in consequence more catchiness as well. The five Dutchmen all undeniably brought the best of their talent and, though everyone will hear marked Dream Theater, Enchant and Spock's Beard influences, one must admit that the overall sound features a very personal touch that highlights the band's individuality. Expressiveness is omnipresent and strangely, the complex riffs and structures never poop the party. On the contrary; each time the musicians go off into a flight of virtuosity, it's as if they grab your heart and squeeze it until you feel some sort of delightful pain that makes you feel more alive Now, apart from that, I won't ruin everything by telling you too many details. Talking a lot about shit is no problem but when it comes to reviewing a great album, I don't feel like I have the right to mess things up with superfluous boloney

DRIVER "A Letter To Bryson City"
CD 90/100
Emo Hardcore
USA
Waaaw! Watch out, for this is one hell of an album and a colossal band. This is what you get by listening to bands you never heard before. You discover some of them and you totally fall in love with their music. The first time I listened to this album, I got the same feeling I got each time I discovered a new band back in the days and totally loved their music, meaning that I skipped every song after listening to it for about 20 seconds, just because I couldn't wait for the following track. It's a feeling I didn't have for a long time. And that's what I had with all of these songs. And since then, I just can't get enough of this album. I listen to it very often, almost every day... This is what I call song writing. Sometimes they crush it really hard and now and then they slow it down, but everything they do, they do it with style, feeling and experience. This is one of the greatest Emo Hardcore bands I've heard in my life. But you should rather put the emphasis on Emo. It's like Cave In meeting The Ataris. Not really aggressive, vocally speaking. But let's cut it with all those genres, they just rock. And they're not afraid to introduce violins to make the whole thing more emotional. Sunday Driver: I just love it!

SYSTEMA
"S/T"
CD 94/100
Space Rock
Spain
Oh my God!!! It's been years since I've heard such a complete album. I didn't know Systema before, but I heard some great things about them through friends. This Spanish formation from Sevilla sure have an abundance of talent and knew how to use it to make this magnificent piece of art. It's kind of the only album I've listened to for the past few weeks. Why? It's got everything! They mix up elements from various music styles: Rock, Pop, Metal, Funk, Jazz, but the Rock edge predominates. The synthesizer gives the whole thing a spacey sound and takes you to higher spheres. And that's also one of their main themes: the micro cosmos. Their lyrics are in Spanish, but here that's a thing that gives an extra dimension to the album, just because the singer's got a particular and beautiful voice. The fact they have very various songs - from metallic tainted tracks to slower emotional and stirring ones - demonstrates the genius in the songwriting process and within the gifted musicians. They all seem to be able to give life to their instruments and make the whole ordeal sound like perfect harmony. Therefore they even deserve to be placed in a new category: Space Rock. My special attention goes out to the songs "Órbita", "Habitante n° 0" and "Nueva Página". The hidden track on the album's very spatial as well. Wanna find out more about this band? I sure do

TENEBROSUS
"The Fall of the Worthless Morals"
CD 72/100
Black Metal
Poland
Extreme, uncompromising Black Metal in Marduk style. This is how Tenebrosus describe their debut album. Well, I can agree with this comparison. With this album, we witness the rise of another good Polish band that, in the future, might be named together with for instance Vader or Graveland, which already are monuments of the Metal scene. This CD is distributed by Metal Mind Production, a Polish (?) label, until now unknown to me. Coming back to the comparison with Marduk, the good thing is that Black Metal fans generally appreciate the Marduk music. Tenebrosus' compositions are equally violent and fast; there is some room for experimental intermezzos and the sound is pretty good. On the other hand, this album lacks a bit of originality and identity, but this is something that can be worked on in future work and might lead to real recognition of this band. The major problem I have with this CD is its rather short playtime; 36.5 minutes is just a little too short for me. But all in all this debut of Tenebrosus is pretty good. Remember their name as it might be praised soon!

THE
MOVEMENT "Move"
CD 67/100
Punk-Rock-Mod
Denmark
It's very funny... just by listening to the first 10 seconds of the album, you totally understand why this band calls itself "The Movement". You hear one of Fidel Castro's famous sentences. Meaning they're aware of political problems - political "Movements" - and the other meaning of the word you'll get by listening to the second song, where they introduce Ska elements - something they also do in some of their other songs. That, mixed with Punk, Rock'n'Roll and Mod, makes people want to "Move" their booty! Like The Hives, they are all about wearing suits when performing, which gives them a personal touch. This power trio from Copenhagen was influenced by The Clash, The Who and The Jam, and you can hear that in their music. I've got to say that I've been surprised in a positive way by their music, but in a negative way by the quality of the record, which is kind of poor and below "regular" norms. The mixing isn't at its best either and the drum on the album came out a little flat. That's why my grade is a little lower, because otherwise I think The Movement has got a lot of potential. I'm going to keep an eye on them. You might want to do that too.

"Warped Tour 2003 Compilation"
CD 83/100
Punk Rock
USA
There's not much to say about this compilation except that it is great!!! This is the fourth compilation in a row I came to own since the year 2000, and I can only drool when I think about all those bands, or almost all of them, touring through the USA each summer, from venue to venue. I even almost made it this year, maybe next Not only will you find two CD's with 26 songs on each one of them, but you'll be able to discover bands here you didn't listen to before, and/or hear some previously unreleased tracks. Most bands are Punk Rock, like NOFX, Slick Shoes, NUFAN, Rufio, Lagwagon, Mest, Simple Plan, but you'll also hear plenty of Post Emo Hardcore bands such as Thrice, The Used, Glassjaw, Story Of The Year, Maxeen, Allister... Yes! The warped tour is becoming an institution. You'd better be a part of it. Owning one of those records is not a bad start.

XIV
DARK CENTURIES "
Den Ahnen Zum Grusse
"
CD 74/100
Pagan Metal
Germany
One thing is sure. CCP Records is for sure the harbor of many German combos. And most of these bands do not have a single problem at all to sing partially or totally in German. XIV Dark Centuries is one of those. " Den Ahnen Zum Grusse " (that's "Hail to our ancestors" in English) tells stories and myths about the German forefathers which lived long ago, when the Vikings were the terror of the Nordic seas and European Kings were playing war during the Crusades These were the days! Not necessary to say that XIV Dark Centuries plays a kind of Pagan/Viking Metal, they call it "Heathen Thuringian Metal" (with Thuringian referring to a region in Germany or something). Their music is very atmospheric and comes indeed from the heart. The keyboard arrangements are very important, as are the guitars, which make the XIV Dark Centuries sound and compositions varied and original. Some acoustic guitars and flutes and samples are used for the final touch. The vocals, mainly gravelly grunts of varying depth, fit the music and the concept perfectly. The followers of this genre, especially in Germany, will in my opinion appreciate this rather good CD!
