AEBSENCE "Unusual" CD 82/100
Strong and Melodic Metal
Hungary

I've heard many excellent Hungarian bands lately and I'm under the impression that Hungaria has the same potential as Czech Republic, which I always loved since they brought us Forgotten Silence, Root, Demimonde and many other great bands whose sound is simply incomparable to any other western band that ever existed before. What Aebsence bring is nothing but Metal with emphatic melodies and powerful riffs. Nothing special one would say... But it IS special because it's been developed the Aebsence way. Now I can't explain you exactly what that means but I guess I should mention the great vocal performance delivered by Péter Budai. He has one of those weird folkish tremolos! I really like it. It actually sounds a bit Punk (remember Jello Biafra?) Plus he's incredibly powerful and as far I've heard, he's also never out of tune. So basically, this album is quite close to perfection, also because the songs are straight and catchy and the sound quality is absolutely outstanding... I hope this is not again a band that's already condemned to stay anonymous because they're not coming from the USA... Only the future will tell, but in the meantime, please check them out and support them!

ALCHEMIST "Austral Alien" CD 95/100
Alien Hybrid Metal
Australia

Alchemist have been making music together for over 9 years. Toured Australia countless times, produced 5 CD releases, and are still going strong!" is what I read on their site. Well, it shows. Boy, are these guys great! To think that they started off in the technical Thrash department... What you hear today cannot be described any other way than Alien Hybrid Metal. And to my opinion that's exactly what accounts for the fact that these guys kept going for so long. If you want your music to last, the only way is to constantly regenerate your concept of it. It's clear that to initiate your quest in a technical genre opens up broader horizons: the fretboard prowess is omnipresent here but the good point is that it's never overdone. So, you'll definitely get no wanking: just dead efficient grooves and gimmicks alternated with ethereal Pink Floyd-like guitar solos. What else? A kick-ass rhythm section with excellent live drums, drum loops, a groovy bass line... original futuristic keys that enrich the overall compositions while masterfully avoiding excess. O, excellent songwriting skills deserve to be mentioned too: the quartet succeeds to create an absolutely convincing universe of alienating atmospheres, tantalizing melodies and contained aggression. Compliments for the lyrics; they paint a lucid portrait of mankind's impact on nature and the paradox between our greatness and the silly destructive goals we pursued throughout history. Very refreshing indeed from the typecast fantasy, macho or gore storytelling we so often have to endure in this genre that is Metal. It's about time someone gave a piece of his mind in a straightforward yet poetic way! But don't be fooled: Adam is no sissy; he can get really scary at times. Vocals are terribly variegated and range from yelled over raspy over clean... always with amazing skill and justness (which isn't common: usually a singer is better at one or the other). This CD takes you on a trip through time and space, not only where the ambiances are concerned but also on the level of sounds. Next to the heavy distorted riffs, near-gothic grooves and modern overall sound, melodic guitars have this very eighties crystalline New Wave edge to them that I love (somewhat made me think of my old Simple Minds and U2 records). Of course Alchemist's music goes way beyond mere rumination of old glories. Yep, this stuff is completely original, completely genuine and most of all up to date. It grooves your head off and the dynamic interplay of wide panoramas bursting with futuristic little sounds and ultra-heavy choruses captures your attention from the first note till the very last. Key words here would no doubt be "clever, inventive and multi-faceted". O, and then there's this little "vibrant" thing that many Australian bands put in their music (remember Midnight Oil? That's a fine example too of this Australian thing...). Can't put my finger on it but it's definitely there...This CD looks good, sounds good and keeps your mind and body wide awake. What more could you wish for? Well, to get hold of it of course!

ATOM AND HIS PACKAGE "Attention! Blah blah blah" CD 85/100
Punk rock
U.S.A.

Waaw. I haven't had such fun listening to an album since a long time. I must admit I wasn't very fond of the previous Atom And His Package album; I thought it was really weird, but this fourth release has really made it. This new album still remains a bit weird in a way, but it also makes me laugh.
It's kind of difficult to compare this band - which is composed of just one person (how crazy can you be?) - to other ones, but I'd say its genre lies in between The Aquabats and 30 Foot Fall, both musically and lyrically. Musically, due to the use of the synthesizer (Aquabats) and the sing-along melodies (30 Foot Fall). But in general, the music varies from Punk Rock to Pop Punk. And then I still didn't mention the humor in the lyrics. Hilarious! And I thought the lyrics of The Vandals were the best. Just listen to these songs. Atom, that's the artist's name, has got a lot of imagination, although he sings about some interesting topics. Atom And His Package is like the Teletubbies, but for adults. It just brings a smile to my face when I listen to this album. I love it!

AXIS OF PERDITION "The Ichneumon Method" CD 80/100
Apocalycomplex Black Art
England

Are there only two people to make all that noise? Goddammit, I thought it was a horde of four or five Norwegian Vikings at least! Well, I guess we can say that this pair of Black Metallers is pretty skilled both as composers and musicians. Once again, Rage Of Achilles found a band that play insanely dark and complex music. Sometimes I wonder how they do that... I get dozens of crappy Black Metal demos over here and none compares with bands such as Axis Of Perdition. Sigh... Since Emperor showed the way (and then unfortunately stopped playing), lots of new Black Metal bands followed their steps and entered a world of total chaos, profound darkness and evil, which can be visited only by night in your worst nightmares or by day in your very own life, putting this vicious CD in your player... On the press-sheet, it's said that the lyrics are inspired by Lovecraftian literature. That I believe! I'm sure there was no CD accompanying the Necronomicon, but it could have been this one!

BETWEEN THE LINES "Wake up call" CD 80/100
Straight forward hardcore
Belgium

Sometimes it's really difficult to review some albums. It happens that you have got to listen to an album over and over again before you find something to write about. It was like that for the new Between The Lines album. The first few times I listened to their "Wake Up Call", I had some mixed emotions about it: It wasn't bad at all, but it wasn't an album you could write home about either. But the more I listened to it, the more I was starting to like it. I'm usually not really into this Hardcore music, but I have got to admit that this Belgian band has got the necessary anger, emotion and power to measure up to the better European Hardcore bands. They use a lot of variation in their songs, which makes this album pleasant to listen to. They play very simple chords on the other hand, but we all know music doesn't need to be complicated nor technical to be good. I've always said: "Why do it the hard way, if you can do it the easy way?" Between The Lines understood this and made a nice album you should be proud to add to your collection.

BLAZE "As Live As It Gets" 2CD 82/100
Heavy metal
England

Blaze's vocal performance has provided a bit of a controversy these past years. Acclaimed for sporting the banner of British Heavy Metal in his youthful days with Wolfsbane, his reputation even won him a place with England's greatest Metal band of all time, when Steve Harris and co pulled him into Maiden. Unfortunately, no mere mortal can be expected to fill the shoes of the human air raid siren, not even Blaze Bayley. It came as no surprise then that after several years of facing the biting bile of the press and disappointed fans, he was quickly dismissed when Bruce returned to the iron fold. A decision that must have cut through Blaze's soul. However, in hindsight, it turned out to be the right decision. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he struck back hard at the unbelievers and formed Blaze, a band with whom he is undoubtedly more at ease. They're down to their third album now, a live double CD that showcases songs from all his musical endeavors. And if you're still adamant about Blaze not being able to carry a tune in a bucket, just listen to this one. It'll take about 2 seconds to convince you otherwise.

BROKEN ARROW "Abyss Of Darkness" CD 82/100
Melodic Power Metal
Italy

Italian Power Metal. Bang! Normally, you like it or you hate it. But I can't imagine how one could hate this band! Why? You're asking me why? Well, I'm gonna tell ya... Broken Arrow is simply not one of those stereotyped bands who just listen to other commercial Power Metal bands and then replay the same thing again and again in order to make big bucks. No. This album features original structures, rather unique melodies and there's a global Latin feel that you can't hear in the sound itself but it's clearly inside the moods that are adroitly shaped with passion and a certain IQ as well. Some parts do sound progressive but I must say that calling Broken Arrow a Prog band would be a terrible mistake. The quintet is obviously influenced by the old wave of Power/Heavy Metal. Bands like Rainbow or Queensrÿche are a very big part of their sound and I think no one will dare to deny it. However, the way in which these skilled musicians arranged the songs is definitely modern. Some instrumental parts may even remind you of some good old Dream Theater stuff... Give it a try, you won't regret it for sure!

CATASTROPHE BALLET "Test Of Time" CD 70/100
Alternative Goth Rock
Germany

I'm not very familiar with Catastrophe Ballet and I must admit that I was expecting something more from a band that already played 500 gigs plus released 8 albums since its creation. This live-CD reminds me of Danzig's "Live On The Black Hand Side", but the songs on this one are even more repetitive. Sometimes it's like you start with a chorus, you repeat it, you repeat it again and again and the song is over. Can you believe that? I know people like the easy stuff but this is way too basic for me to fully appreciate it... I'm persuaded that this kind of music can be really great in somber underground clubs in urban Germany while you're half-stoned and there's a cool gothic slut teasing your dick while you're shaking your crazy head in the pit... but definitely not in my player. I should get a beer now... Maybe I can listen to the CD and just fantasize? Hallo! Ich bin nu in Berlin! Hey, the cover of "Anarchy In The U.K." is pretty cool! Pity they put that depressive cover of "Goodbye Cruel World" (Pink Floyd) 2 tracks later. Now I'm gonna cry!

CEREMONIUM "No Longer Silent" CD 82/100
Death Metal
USA

Fuck, what's happening? I haven't enjoyed Death Metal so much since... actually it was a pretty long time ago... and I very recently (re)discovered all these great bands around... yes, like Ceremonium! Well, I may be a little drunk (just a little, I swear!) but still, this is truly excellent! I think the last time I heard Ceremonium was ten years ago; I vaguely remember a 7-inch but I'm not sure anymore... Whatever... These guys have something very special in their sound that somehow makes it atmospheric and thus very catchy... I think it's the twisted doomy parts. Or maybe it's the way they structured their songs... I don't know exactly, but what I'm sure of is that this here is no basic and meaningless Death Metal. Moreover, I wonder why they're not signed on a bigger label yet. I mean: they could be! They have both a very particular playing and a totally underground attitude, but still, this is stuff people would like to see and buy in stores! As for that "Cromlech" cover, it's simply the best!...

CLOSTERKELLER "Graphite" CD 84/100
Goth Rock/Metal
Poland

There we go... The goth doll on the front cover; you already know what's gonna happen next. However, this is not just another waste of time, believe me! When I first heard the album I thought it was some kind of poppy and slimy Goth Rock release without any interest but then, gradually, I started to feel like attracted by the "easy" melodies and now that I'm totally addicted to Closterkeller (better than cocaine for sure) I can tell they're pretty good at creating catchy songs. Well, Anja (the female singer) does ninety percent of the creating-catchy-melodies-job but still... I really enjoyed it. For those whom are not acquainted with this Polish band, let me explain... The band exists since 1990 and they've released quite a nice bunch of albums so far. But all in Polish! And this is their 2000 recording, which has been re-released with English vocals on it. I've heard Anja sing in Polish and I prefer the original version but that's just a matter of taste... Fans of unpredictable and talented singers (Lene Lovitch, Tori Amos...) will love it anyway. Now, I hope they'll come out of Poland with more albums because people need to hear what this band is capable of!

CYBER AXIS "Skin" CD 80/100
Neo-Indus Electro
Germany

... So it seems that Oliver Müller finally decided to breathe new life into Cyber Axis. After having stridden the paths of Electro from 1993 till 1997, the singer and main songwriter indeed announced the end of the band as we knew it. Although a couple of MCDs were released in the meantime, our patience has finally been rewarded with the creation of a new line-up featuring Matthes Ewald and Axel Kleintjes and the release of "Skin". A new sound for a new era... This stuff really wakes you up! What can I say? It's hard to pin down but some CDs just make you feel as if you had twelve cups of coffee in a row (hallucinations included). Try to imagine a very danceable Electro with some light eighties influences spiced up with metallic grooves and aggressive vocals that kick your ass by surprise every once in a while. It's a very good thing all three gentlemen can sing since, owing to this, the vocals in question are variegated and take on both clean and rougher aspects (reminiscent of Neo vocals but more sensitively adapted to the different ambiances). Some of the voices are really scary and evil at times. Great! Atmospheres are very eloquent and I don't see why some of these tracks couldn't feature in a fast-paced sci-fi movie. Again, this is a very high quality release we got from Hardbeat. Sounds great and looks great. Good job! Although the booklet doesn't contain the words to the music, you'll notice that it flaunts very attractive artwork in compensation.

DARK MOOR "Between Light and Darkness" CD 90/100
Atmospheric Metal
Spain

Mmm, normally, I am not too much into this kind of soft Metal music, but I have to admit, "Between Light and Darkness" from the Spanish guys (and girls) of Dark Moor is really excellent and they gained a fan! The music of these people really has grown (this is already their 4th full-length album) leading to this very diversified masterpiece. The CD starts rather slow with some melancholic songs. I especially liked the third one, "A Lament of Misery" which has something typically Spanish (Southern European at least) and really is a beauty. This song is followed by an intriguing and tense violin and cello intermezzo. Then we come to the part in which guitars are playing a more important role, giving the more Metal-oriented songs even more intensity. The singing of Elisa just fits perfectly with the music, without being too theatrical which is now often the case with similar bands. The music is highly dramatic, and then again really warm, mainly due to the musical roots of these people that have been incorporated in their work. For giving an extra dimension to their work, Dark Moor has recruited a lot of guest musicians: harp, flute, classic guitar, violin, viola, cello, piano, organ and choirs, you have it all. People who like the Gathering or Within Temptation will really appreciate this new CD of Dark Moor. This stuff is really good and in my opinion even better than what we're used to getting.

DESDEMONA "Supernova" CD 85/100
Electro Space Metal
Poland

From what I gather after a dip in their magnificent yet fully Polish typeset site, this band is currently composed of 5 people (the CD booklet - nice artwork by the way! - only mentioned 4 members and none of them seems to be in charge of drums or keys despite the numerous loops and samples). They have been releasing music since 2001 and this "Supernova" appears to be their second full-length. But let's get down to business now... Despite the frail ethereal female vocals and the high electro content, there are definitely Metal elements here. The music feels energetic and heavy, which is hard to accomplish when you're also aiming for a spacey feel. These guys pulled it off just fine, though, and what you end up with is a set of 14 very original songs with clearly progressive structures (in a broad sense - so don't expect Prog Metal...), crammed with clever electronics, loops and estranging atmospheres. Yet the most striking element is undoubtedly the vocal work. Agata's skilled vocals are excellent. She maintains great accuracy throughout every sensitive nuance she lays down according to the mood of each song. On top of that, the technical crew dug deeply into their box of tricks to adorn the vocals with extra sound effects or reverb in order to make them fit the changing ambiences even better - a task in which they brilliantly succeeded. The only drawback a fanatic of good vocals like myself might identify herein is that, at times, these little tricks tend to drown Agata's prowess a bit, somewhat detaching her from the whole picture. Admittedly this doesn't make this CD any less admirable or enjoyable and most people won't notice that slight loss of balance, which in the end truly is a very subjective matter. We're definitely not dealing with your average atmospheric ambient release here. I'm talking ghostly (I'd even say haunting), threatening and almost clinical atmospheres fed with moving vocal vibes. You could compare listening to this record to slowly sinking into a half frozen lake while high up near the surface you see the rays of the sun scatter in the water and rain down on you like golden specks of pure energy.

DGM "Hidden place" CD 83/100
Progressive Metal
Italy

I know what the letters DGM stand for but I've imagined they could eventually stand for "Dude... Great Music!" as well... This is surely not the first great release we've received from Scarlet Records so far (nor it is the last I think...) but it's always a pleasure to hear such great music and I believe no Prog fan will say I'm wrong. Not only does the album feature totally high-class melodies and structures but it's also very well arranged and that includes the whole production and post-production process. Of course, we have to thank Carmelo Orlando for the great job he did behind his console... Musically, everything was well thought through; the riffs are strong, catchy... well, maybe not original enough to avoid comparisons with a couple of famous Prog bands (like the forever-named Dream Theater), but certainly original enough to avoid bad gossip anyway... So we can affirm that DGM have indeed found their own sound and believe me, you're gonna enjoy it! The singer's performance is really nice too. His vocal texture can be positioned somewhere in-between James LaBrie and Klaus Meine, which makes it very elastic and that's a very good point for the band whose music was already good enough even without any vocals... You know what's left to do... And don't fucking download the whole album, you cheapskate morons! Support this band!

DIGITUS IN RECTO "Switch!!!" CD 82/100
Crossover
Czech Republic

Behind that great Latin name you'll find nothing but "a finger up your ass". That should keep lots of intellectual bastards away from this weird yet unbelievably cool release. Crystal Prod already provided us with some great bands but I think this one is the most original they've sent me so far. First, you get a great package with a very nice slipcase. Then you play the CD and... No, you can't fake indifference in response to this! This is fucking original and you now it! Well, part of this music has been played by many bands before, but it's the blend that actually makes it unique. Once you hear Suicidal Tendencies-like choruses (with the great girlish harmonies), then you fall into a crazy Anthrax feel and... Metal, Rock, Pop patterns, female vocals, twisted happy moods... What the hell is this? I don't know exactly but I noticed that Lubo plays here. He was the guitarist in both Lunatic Gods and Editor. Those whom remember these killer bands will understand what kind of weirdness we're talking about... Highly recommended if you're open-minded enough!

DREAGGAN "Still Fighting" CD 65/100
Heavy Thrash
France

Who says Thrash is dead anyway? Definitely not the guys from Dreaggan, as they're far too busy having fun with this totally over-the-top homage to all things heavy. Having an acute case of deadseriousness or suffering form a chronic lack of humour, are you? Try spinning this disc for instant cure. "Return Of Wolves" is based on the theme of Castlevania, for chrissakes! The next track tries to push the envelope a bit further still with an intro that would not be out of place on the next Conan flick. The rest of the song is straightforward Thrash though. You'd think that they would have reached their apex now, but nope, on track 3 the album successfully makes the jump to ludicrous Speed. "Die Bastard Die" is a thought-provoking, eloquent treatise on the Metal scene. Sort of. So, it this an innovative record? No.
Are they virtuoso musicians? Err... no. Does it have a good, well-balanced production? Next question. Are Dreaggan great? Absolutely.

DYING PASSION "Voyage" CD (Japanese special edition) 85/100
Atmospheric Metal
Czech republic

Here's another Czech band that I truly love! I know them since the release of their excellent album "Secretly" that was out back in 2000 on Metal Breath/Epidemie Records. Now, the question is: how the hell did they end up on a Japanese label? Well, the answer is quite easy. The second full-length ("Voyage") was originally released back in 2002 by Metal Breath and this is simply a re-released version with a bonus track ("Nightfall", re-mix). Those who already possess the original version may feel a little unconvinced and it's quite understandable. Why would they purchase another copy of that nearly identical disc? For one bonus track only? Well, the real fans won't think it over twice. But the others may just pass... Anyway, I think we should talk a little about this band for those who never heard of it yet (shame on you!). Dying Passion play a sort of gentle Atmospheric Metal that is enriched by the performance of an excellent female vocalist; not the classic moaner - that's a relief, right? And there's another girl playing the flute who embellishes the songs even more. You can find Goth/Folk influences here and there, but it's not like it's their first aim... The band plainly orients his songs towards subtle yet direct moods and the result is totally convincing. That's about all I can say. Hope I've made you curious enough because Dying Passion is really worth your attention...

DYSRHYTHMIA "Pretest" CD 75/100
Instrumental post rock
USA

Basically I don't like virtuosity. At all. This being said, there are few artists out there still able to retain some inspiration in the midst of the technical fury. It is no surprise such people are to be found in the post rock area rather than progressive metal; all the more so when the band's moniker reads Dysrhythmia and Relapse Records are involved, you are in for a massive dose of original musicianship. 'Pretest' is a full-on instrumental record in which the trio spans a wide range of moods yet retaining a tight and precise delivery. Though far less aggro than labelmates Dillinger Escape Plan (with wich they shared stage with), the record is also more human friendly; you can actually HEAR what's going on. The standout track is 'Heat Sink', which builds up on an interwoven frame suddenly breaking into a frantic ride. On the other side of the scope, ambient heads will relish on 'Touch Benediction', the record's neverending conclusion offering lulling drums and ironic chords. A definite must have for connoisseurs into the aesthetics of destructuration.

ENDLESS TIME "Ancient Tales" CD 78/100
Fairytale Metal
Italy

A decade ago, it was considered to be a definite faux pas to have a girl as a lead singer in any Heavy Metal band (except for Doro Pesch maybe). Today we live in different times. Liv Kristine, Anneke van Giersbergen and a score of others have opened the gates to a world where women can be part of the Metal scene and are to be taken seriously (Anyone remember Cycle Sluts from Hell?). Endless Time also sport a front err... lady: Laura Teragni. Their first demo, Ancient Tales, starts out with an enchanting Folk melody in which she already proves she can be quite endearing. On the second track, "The Screaming Of My Soul", the album goes full throttle with a riff that I associated without flinching with Queensrÿche oldie "Queen Of The Rÿch". In these up-tempo metallic parts Laura trades her fragile crooning for a more rawk and roll approach. A bit of a surprise there as in this playing fields one has come to expect high pitched operatic vocals in the vein of Nightwish. "King Of The Waves" is sort of the joker of the pack, being the weakest track on the demo, but they make up for it in spades with the thoughtfully written "Unwanted Treason". After a moody intro the maiden twin guitar attack kicks in with some nice interplay between the female vocals and the male backings. It's a shame that with such a moniker the fun only lasts for 14 minutes as this bunch truly have the potential to grow beyond the overcrowded Italian scene.

EPHEL DUATH "The Painter's Palette" CD 92/100
Toohardtodescribe Metal
Italy

There are boundaries. Some musicians cross them and become geniuses. Or complete fools if they're unlucky (or misunderstood...). After the boundaries, you get the boundaries of the boundaries. And those, as you may know, aren't crossed very often because beyond them there's nothing but deadly ground. So when someone dares to take a step up to this very next level, everyone sees the band as already fucked. If you looked at my personal rating before you read this text, you already know that Ephel Duath is still very alive and kickin' despite the fact that they've gone so far. Yes, this album is pure madness, but - paradoxically maybe - it totally makes sense. The Italian combo brought so many nuances that the whole recording cannot be described with just words. You'll find lots of jazzy shuffle rhythm, atonal guitar patterns, schizophrenic trumpet interventions plus tons of other odd things. Coming up with such an album was like trying to summarize millions of styles to finally obtain one. And I'm constrained to admit that Ephel Duath totally succeeded in this audacious yet very image-enhancing quest. It's like a world trip during which you meet thousands of perfumes, colors and sounds. It can be seen as both educational (for other musicians) and emotionally enriching (for everyfuckingone). Now... I won't lie to you: it is an extremely exhausting album, but it's definitely worth the detour. Unique in its genre, tough there's no actual genre of this kind!

GEASA "Fate's Lost Son" CD 68/100
Epic Black/Doom
Ireland

Irish Metalheads do still like folk. A lot! Apparently these people have some kind of a strong attachment to their land, their roots, their tradition and... well, this is no Skyclad either, but Geasa make use of acoustic open chords and classical Irish patterns in about all their songs and that makes it clearly sound very folkish. The entirety of the album is thus colored with special tints that make it a little more original than the average Black Metal release. Vocals are both high pitched and clear, including a couple of epic choruses. And there's a sturdy doomy feel that you can't miss. That's actually their true winner card. Now, I don't remember how their debut-album (out on Season Of Mist in 1998) sounded but this one seems to suffer from a couple of production flaws. I think the main problem is the drums; they awfully get on one's nerves after a very short while. To tell you the truth, they don't even sound real... In case this is a drum machine we're hearing, I hope they'll buy another one soon. Otherwise, they'd better hire a good sound engineer to make the whole kit sound a little more natural because there's no need to have a full-time drummer if it sounds like this... I'm sorry. As for the tracks 6 until 11, they're just a remastered version of the band's demo "Starside". Hope they didn't pay for that! Because this is real bad taste padding to me... I still think they brought something good on the first 5 tracks anyway; now it's up to you to decide if you wanna pay the price of a full-length for this half-real new release...

GUTTER SIRENS "Memory Analysis" CD 65/100
Power Metal
Poland

Now the last thing I would think of when putting Poland, today and Metal in the same sentence is Power Metal. No, extreme and not always politically correct Death and Black is what you'd come to expect, rather than a Polish attempt at Savatage. Well, this quintet called Gutter Sirens seems to be the proverbial exception to the rule. Melodic Power Metal is their game, synths and solos abounding. I do wonder if their chosen solitary path will work to their advantage - being one of the only bands that play this genre in their homeland, should earn them the love and support of Polish True metal fans everywhere - or will the black hordes of their fellow countrymen have them for an appetizer? Enough about musical ethnography; music should speak for itself whatever its origin. And that music is fine for the most part, except for the ridiculously amateurish cover and the vocals, which are more often than not slightly off key. A shame actually, because his voice does fit this sort of Epic style. Get to work on those points and you'll be out of the gutter before long, boys.

HERALDRY "Shadows Of Ancient Skies" CD 65/100
Progmetal
Italy

Heraldry may then not herald (pardon the pun) a new wave of Italian Heavy Metal, they still deserve their niche amongst their peers in Prog. Unassuming in itself due to its generic nature, the tiny details are what makes it stand out a bit. For instance, the synths have a psychedelic feel to them at times that allows a break from the prefab keyboard sections many Italian records are riddled with. The vocals also are quite bizarre. Some of the interplay with the backing vocals is so high-pitched that on behalf of the lead singer's posteriority, I strongly recommend him to wear his leather pants one size larger. Just take a listen to the title track for further illustration. It's an able release that won't shock you in its originality, but that has no distinctive weak points either.

INCENDIUM "After Silence" demo CD-R 72/100
Melodic Metal
Finland

This one is the kind of band you just can't listen to. I mean, you can, but you'll hear nothing but the singer. Not only did Aki (that's the guy's name) write ultra catchy melodic parts, but also he's got a naturally delightful vocal texture that perfectly matches with the instrumental background. I must admit that after the first track ("Drowned In You"), he's sometimes a bit out of tune because he tries a couple of things that aren't tailored to his range, but we're talking about minor approximations here; I'm sure most of you wouldn't even notice it if I weren't there to inform you. Anyway, the four tracks are quite convincing. Maybe they need to spend some more time in the studio to polish up their songs. But it's a great demo. Amateurs of poetic and atmospheric Metal, grab your computer and check out their website. Maybe they have plans?...

KONKHRA "Reality Check" CD 84/100
Death/Thrash Metal
Denmark

Konkhra may not be the most original band around, but they still fuckin' rule! While others swim in stagnant waters or - worse - become softer than the skin on a baby's ass, Konkhra remains the same. Well, not exactly the same, but I guess you all clearly understand what I mean. "Reality Check" is nothing but an excellent Death/Thrash release that grinds your brain and that will make your grandma very angry if you turn the volume a little too up. Damn old bitch! She doesn't know what's actually good for her dying rotten bones! Headbanging for grannies! Highly recommended! Jokes apart... this is music you're forced to appreciate. Not because there's someone to tell you that it's good but only because it IS good! There are a couple of weird guitar things that are worth the discovery, plus the habitual grooving madness... What else did you expect? There's a copy waiting for you to come and buy it at your local record store. Go get it now!

LOST SOUL "Übermensch" CD 73/100
Death Metal
Poland

Gather round damned souls, for a dark storm is brewing in Poland. Pursuing the dark forces of Vader and Behemoth, a new horde awaits to wreak havoc on Europe's shores: Lost Soul. The armaments of their Blitzkrieg are definitely all of American make. Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness are an obvious and accurate reference point as are Poland's own harbingers of Death, Vader. The songwriting itself is quite up to standard, even though it never strays far from the left hand path. Crushingly heavy guitars and a relentless pace, which only slows down on "Soul Hunger". The grunts sound as if they came from the throat of David Vincent himself. Interspersed between these breakneck speed death invocations are ambient-like dark soundscapes that not merely pose as a balancing counterweight, but also aid in keeping the album interesting from start to finish. Lulling you into a false sense of security for a few seconds, before launching another aural assault on your ears. So, are Lost Soul the new übermenschen of the Polish Death Metal scene? No, not yet, they lack just a tad of originality to claim the throne, but the war is not over.

MINDFIELD "Be-Low" CD 84/100
Melodic Straight Metal
Germany

Andy Classen did it again! And I think everyone can hear he's still the ruler of German big-sounding productions. Now, is this all about a rather expensive production only? Not really. We're facing incredible musical talent here and that's the main thing that makes it really interesting. Most songs are straight, rock'n'rollish, driven by simple yet tremendously effective rhythms and their melodic aspect comes to embellish the whole thing as a cherry on the cake. The very first melodic phrasing catches your attention for the rest of the album so there's not even any need to concentrate, 'coz you're already caught in a vortex of addiction. Some may find the global aspect of "Be-low" a bit gay, but that's because you're damn cheap-minded! There are lots of Atmo/Goth influences here indeed, but that doesn't make it weak; on the contrary! The strongest riffs are the ones that stay in your mind, not the ones that make your plectrum turn into plastic dust... Hey, can you recognize that great Testament-ish feel on the title track? Pretty cool, huh?

MORTUS "Leaving The Swamps" CD 85/100
Groovy Melodic Death Metal
Austria

My research has brought me back to 1994 in Austria and browsing through past releases I was happily surprised with the evolution this band went through. Indeed, from a more mainstream Death Metal, these four guys ended up in a very hard to pin down genre. Of course you can still hear a predominant bunch of Metal influences, which keeps the stuff powerful and heavy. Next to the original Death Metal basis, you can spot some Paradise Lost, Metallica ("If Eternity Was Enough") and Soulfly to name just the biggies. What was even more astounding to me was a very slight Rock coloring reminiscent of 16 Horsepower ("Compact") and, on certain songs, some folky ("Phyllis & Stanley") tendencies that brought Skyclad up in the back of my mind. I guess these guys must listen to a lot of different things and that's all to their merit. While the previous album "Explore New Horizons" still had a lot of mainstream Death Metal to it, this latest release shows that a lot of effort was put into the exploration of even more new horizons in search of a way to let the genre breathe. On the vocal level, you have alternating raspy Neo vocals and many clean-sung parts that are truly excellent because of their expressiveness. The refrains are really catchy and harbor some great hit potential. Guitarwise there are a lot of simple yet efficient riffs that win you over from the first measures of the songs and distorted and clean parts alternate nicely. Fortunately, the catchiness never gets on your nerves and doesn't start to bore you by the time you reach the middle of a composition. Another good point with this one is that the Neo/HC edge doesn't spin around an endless carousel of empty monotonous grooves but instead backs up the more melodic side of the music, which remains central. I wouldn't say there's a speck of noticeable commercial opportunism here; nevertheless, this disc will please a very broad audience (not only the pure Metal fan) owing to its diversity. A tad of personality could still be added, but I'd say that's the never-ending musician's quest and these guys are more than able to handle it...

NADP "Hard to deny" CD 59/100
Old school hardcore punk
The Netherlands

Just by looking at the artwork of this new NADP-album, I knew this was going to be an old school Hardcore Punk band: tough guys, tattoos, hooligan clothing, the typical font,… and it got confirmed by listening to album. It's fast, it's hard, it makes you wanna tear everything down and run with your head into a wall, or against somebody else's head. Who knows? That's the effect young kids try to create when they start a band of this genre in their garage when they're in high school. But this isn't a young band, NADP have been at it for about 16 years! And that's when I start asking questions: Why don't they use their experience to release albums where you can distinguish one song from the other? All songs just sound the same: same three accords the whole album through, a repetitive song structure all over again, not enough (almost none actually) breaks, similar vocal lines, no variation in drums, … and I can go on like this! NADP - a.k.a. Noisy Act Of Protest - may be fast, hard and "noisy", but they're just not quite noisy enough to keep me awake. No! If this were the debut album of some kids, I would say they've got potential, but I think these "dinosaurs" (in the music business) can do way better than this! Certainly after all those years!

NAMELESS CRIME "Nameless Crime" CD 72/100
Up-to-date Speed Metal
Italy

Due to all the Rhapsody clones, one would come to think that the Italian scene only spawns Epic Power Metal. Well, Nameless Crime proves you wrong. Presenting one the finer covers I've seen lately - sober yet original and aesthetic - this band delivers a slab of aggressive but melodic Speed Metal with a modern feel to it. The singer even speaks English properly counter to many of his truer compatriots. Nocturnal Music really has an ear for excellent artists in no matter what sub genre. Be it the plodding funeral Doom of My Shameful, Alice In Darkland's Gothic Metal or Italian Speed Metal like this Nameless crime, who shall remain nameless for not much longer, I'm sure.

NARCOZE "Genoma" CD 60/100
Heavy metal
Brazil

From the land of Sepultura comes the new hope for the Brazilian Heavy Metal scene, Narcoze. These fellas have been at it for some eight years, but only now come out of the rainforest to make a go for the European market through a license with the Italian label Cruz del Sur Music. I have mixed emotions about this album actually. On the one hand it displays a great familiarity with all kinds of styles form the harder edge to the more mellow side, making a pleasantly diverse set. On the other hand, even though Narcoze already recorded their first demo in 1995, Genoma still sounds like a band just getting started by occasionally dropping the ball while arranging and executing the songs. Just a touch of finesse, guys and Wacken's the next stop.

NOFX "Regaining Unconsciousness" EP 83/100
Punk Rock
U.S.A.

I sure don't need to introduce you to the NOFX Punk Rock dinosaurs! They've been on this Punk planet for a while and if they keep on going like this, they'll sure get fossilized bringing their music... and later on they'll be mentioned "with honors" in the Punk Rock history books. In the meantime, they released this "Regaining Unconsciousness" EP, which precedes their full-length album "War on Errorism", which should be on the market as you are reading this. Four of the five tracks will also appear on that full-length. So it just makes a teaser of this EP, but I'm sure all the loyal NOFX fans will add it to their large collection. You can expect the usual NOFX stuff: politically engaged lyrics with funny Punk melodies, lots of Ska breaks, and of course Melvin's magical back-ups. The last song on it, "13 stitches" is very particular: it's a commercial where they present some songs of their new full-length album, with El Jefe's commentary! Hilarious! A must have to everyone who's always been a big fan!

NUCLEAR ASSAULT "Alive Again" CD 77/100
Trash Metal
USA

I was quite pleased and curious when I found the new Nuclear Assault CD in my mailbox. It brings back memories from 15 years ago, when I started listening to Metal... back when I was quite the Thrash Metal fan (well I still like it of course). I wondered how I somewhat came to forget about Nuclear Assault, but then again, this is what happens when you did not release a thing in 9 years. Well, for those who don't really know Nuclear Assault (and I believe among the younger Metal fans, there's quite a few of you); they were formed by Danny Lilker (also founding member of Anthrax, S.O.D., Brutal Truth,…) in 1984 and were very popular for about 10 years, releasing 6 studio albums and EP's. They played Thrash Metal without any compromise, their lyrics often based upon social concerns. Now, 9 years later, they are back with a European tour (2003 No Mercy Festival Tour and another one in October of this year) and a brand new live CD. They want to prove that they are still alive and kicking and smooth the path for the release of new work. "Alive Again" is a live CD, recorded last year in the USA. Only tracks from their early period ("Game Over", "The Plague EP", "Survive" and "Handle With Care") are found on this live CD. They are indeed alive and kicking I can assure you. I think, this CD will especially please old Thrash Metal fans, who will find back the good ol' live sound and great atmosphere (which is now totally lost) from the late eighties. For the others, it is a chance to learn about those who made Metal popular and big and to get to know what real Metal is!

NUSE "Hung Well" CD 69/100
Thrashy Metalcore
USA

Nuse is another American band that could easily win the contest for the ugliest CD-cover ever. I hope they made it on purpose, otherwise I'll have to believe they're blind or something... Fortunately though, their music is OK... They call it Hardcore but it sounds more like Thrash Metal to me. Moreover, Anthrax is certainly one of their biggest influences. And if I'm wrong, that's the impression that many people who are familiar with Anthrax will have anyway. You're gonna hear some Slayer too... the guitarist totally shreds à la Jeff Hanneman on a few songs, so... Pity there's nothing more! I mean, the album is good but it's certainly not a ticket to celebrity either... The guys have released 5 EPs plus this full-length so far. I think it's time for them to evolve a little bit and take the next step. I'm convinced they're skilled enough to create more original and intense songs... "Hung Well" is really cool but I'm fucking hungry for more...

PLAN 9 "Freakshow" CD 84/100
Emo hardcore punk
Belgium

Oh yeah! I remember seeing Plan 9 for the first time back in 1998 at Belgium's biggest Punk Rock festival (Groezrock), and I've literally seen the evolution of this band because I've seen them quite a few times. I must say they have been improving themselves over the years, finding their own musical style. They started playing Punk Rock but nowadays they play a music style that is more difficult to describe, but leans more toward Emo and Hardcore, although they keep being associated to the Punk Rock scene. One thing is certain: their new songs are very emotional and take me to higher spheres. You can also feel the results on this firm and strong demo release (their second one), which has been made in a very professional way. Even the recording sounds pretty nice for a demo. Way better than their first one. I just think the two singers could bring more variety in the vocals. That's the only remark. I've said this through the years: Plan 9 is the next big thing! It's up to them now to convince the few who haven't heard about them yet.

REACTION ECSTASY TRANSE " In Love With Blood " CD 86
Frightening Atmospheric Metal
Czech Republic

A cry in the dark. Terrible anguish. A fear that takes over your entire body and makes you drunk as if it were some sort of divine intrusion. Or a diabolical one; it's your choice... Right in the middle of this ominous darkness, which reigns all around us, only one music resounds in our heads. It's R.E.T.'s. Never did Metal cause so much unease... You'd believe they botched Black Sabbath for years, then wrung out their grief on top their own musical compositions in order to make them as black as possible... Paradoxically, the layout of this CD sucks as much as its content is utterly rich on the level of deepness and emotion. I can hardly believe it! Much more than just a Doom or Atmo album, "In Love With Blood" is a monument erected in honor of the greatness of the human condition. The aficionados of the genre will not be the ones to tell me otherwise...

REDEMPTION "Redemption" CD 58/100
Progressive Metal
USA

I feel enthusiastic and disappointed at the same time. Look at this line-up: Jason Rullo (Symphony X) on drums, Bernie Versailles (Agent Steel, Fates Warning) on guitars, plus other guests (from Fates Warning and Symphony X as well)... Isn't that great? Well, no because of two reasons: first they picked up Rick Mythiasin on vocals. I know that many consider Steel Prophet as a great band but I think the guy's reputation is a little overrated... Come on! Listen to this album and tell me if you feel something. I feel nothing but pity for the people who want to make money out of this. The second problem is the production, which is awfully dry and doesn't fit at all with the warmth that should radiate from these songs. Yes, you've got it! They took talented guys, put them together in a room and thought that the magic would just happen... But it didn't! Redemption is cold and is veeeery far from being able to compete with each musician's source-bands. I've heard the album four or five times looking for something nicer to say but all I can remember is the chorus on "Desperation - part 3"; that's a great part! The rest is just a bunch of worthless and empty riffs that have been created way too fast. Sorry, but that's my honest opinion and you guys know I can't lie... Redemption reminds me of a sterile version of Shadow Gallery. By the way, I suggest you take a listen to the mighty "Tyranny" instead of wasting your time here... (that's what I'm gonna do right now!). Had an unknown band released this album, I would have said it's a very promising debut but since it features all these well-known musicians, I'd say it's rather a step back for them...

RED WINE "Suenos Y Locuria" CD 69/100
Spanish Heavy Metal
Spain

Red, red wine... Come back to meeee… Err... no, far from playing Reggae or even candlelight music, Red Wine come from the Helloween school of Heavy Metal. Like so many others, you're no doubt thinking. Well, they have an ace up their sleeve, namely the lyrics, and more specifically the language in which they are sung. Except for the last track "Kill Me In Dreams", every other word is in the tongue of Cervantes, meaning: "expect no explanation on what's it about, coz my Spanish is about as good as your Sanskrit I reckon". Obviously, this goes a long way in distinguishing themselves from the legion of other Helloween aficionados. Musically, they follow a less untrodden path and prove themselves to be loyal disciples of their idols. All in all, it comes across as a rather professional release (nice cover from the same guy who does the Edguy and Avantasia records) that has nothing new to offer, but which sets itself apart through the language.

RISE AGAINST "Revolutions Per Minute" CD 84/100
Melodic Punk Rock
U.S.A.

The band Rise Against was formed out of the veteran band 88 Fingers Louie, but they've chosen their own path. I've seen this band live three times, and I noticed two things. First of all: they became very popular in less than two years and fans really are into their music. The other thing I noticed was that no matter how good and professional they sound, they couldn't keep me standing in the crowd during the whole show. To me it was just another fast playing Punk Rock band… Until I heard their new album "Revolutions Per Minute". That's true! I've seen them live but I never heard their albums before. But now I do have their latest album, I understand why people are so enthusiastic about Rise Against. Now I know why people go wild and sing along to all of their songs. They've delivered a masterpiece with this album. The singer's Hardcore voice is in perfect harmony with the Punk Rock music, which is slightly Hardcore tainted, but very powerful. Most of the people call it Melodic Hardcore, but to me it is more Punk Rock. The lyrics are both emotional and political. And although the album sounds sort of linear, it just fills me with energy and emotion. My special attention goes the songs "Black Masks & Gasoline", "Heaven Knows" and especially to "Broken English". Next time I'll see these guys act on stage, I'll probably see them from another point of view. I didn't quite before, but maybe that's due to me getting old! This is one heck of an album!

SATELLITE "A Street Between Sunrise And Sunset" CD 75/100
Progressive Rock
Poland

Sometimes, there's just no surprise at all. Only by looking at this CD's artwork, you can picture yourself what you're dealing with... Yes buddy, this is Marillion-like from the beginning until the end. And I think they're not afraid of the evidence. So... I guess you know what you can expect. Some structures reminded me of more elaborate stuff like Kaipa for example, but all in all it's way simpler. Some instrumental parts sound like Yes too but - again - the instrumental maestria can't be compared here. Nevertheless, the whole thing doesn't sound bad at all. On the level of vocals, there's nothing bad either. I have to admit that sometimes the singer's performance sounds a little shy, but maybe that quiet style of his preserves an intimate climate of which many Prog fans are generally fond. So the only weak point is the lack of originality. Like Forrest Gump would say: "And that's all I have to say about Satellite".

SHADOWCAST "Near Life Experience" 75/100
Atmospheric Metal
Austria

In 1999, keyboard player Clemens Mayr (Amortis) decided to bring his home handicrafts one level higher than private pleasures. Thus he realized the demo "Project Judgement" and set off for the labels; a venture that proved successful indeed because it resulted in a signature with CCP Records. Soon his first full-length "Desperate Accuse Dimension" materialized, presenting a pleasant mix of Pop, Metal en Industrial that has become Shadowcast's trademark. "Near Life Experience" continues the trend with even more authenticity and groove. Mr. Mayr takes care of composition and all synth parts (of course!) but also of guitars as well as spoken and aggressively screamed vocals. The line-up is completed with Lukas Lindenberger (Amortis, Cephalic) on lead vocals and Moritz Neuner (Abigor, Darkwell, Golden Dawn) on drums and drum programming. On the site I also spotted Simon Reinelt, who supposedly handles live guitars. And what does this CD actually sound like? The choruses are mostly rhythmically spoken or whispered, while the very catchy refrains are usually sung, often in parts. Along with the slight Germanic accent and the at times a bit old-fashioned key sounds there are no other drawbacks to mention, which makes this CD very enjoyable indeed. Although I was initially surprised with the slight tensions and strange harmonies between the different sung parts, a second audition was enough to get accustomed to them. That made the rest of my task easier and allowed me to focus on the song structures. Those are very complete, with elaborate synth ornaments and a lot of care for melody. Guitars are rhythmic and efficient and alternately support calmer and heavier songs. All in all this is a variegated, energetic and resourceful album devoid of overdone solos that leaves you in a good mood. An endeavor that deserves to be encouraged! The booklet looks neat and - which is quite rare nowadays - features all the lyrics. It should be mentioned that those have a message and like to tackle subjects like society and the fear and meaning of life. The artwork and layout of the band's site is assorted to the album cover and looks agreeable and well tended.

SOON "Please Accelerate" CD 82/100
Emocore
Belgium

Our little tiny country may have a small but wonderful Punk Rock scene, it's just too bad lots of our bands sound kind of the same. That's why I was pretty surprised by this band Soon and their first full-length album "Please Accelerate". They don't play Punk Rock, far from it. They fit better in the category of Emocore. But still, they add freshness to the Belgian scene with this sound of their own. We didn't actually have this sort of bands here yet. Soon can be compared with Fugazi, Sparta or Thursday: it's very emotional, passionate and expressive, but also edgy, powerful and energetic. Don't think this is an EP because there are only 8 songs on it. This album provides more than half an hour of music and all songs are very nicely elaborated. My preferences go to the songs "Second In A Raw", "Lacuna Drive" and "To Solid Ground". The more I listen to it, the more I think this is one of the better albums we've seen here in years. It is no wonder they were finalists of one of the biggest Rock contests with such music. So don't look further. Like an experienced pot smoker would say: there's nothing like homegrown!

STEEL ATTACK "Predator of the Empire" CD 80/100
True metal
Sweden

With every passing season the road True Metal is taking, it's growing rougher and rougher. The chain that these steel warriors have forged for themselves by its own nature narrows the progression the genre can make from generation to generation down to one single direction: that of quality. This is not only true for the True Metal style, but also for its purveyors, the bands. Staying true to paradigms of Metal, laid down by their acclaimed predecessors, there is little room for experiment or innovation. Thus, where more groundbreaking Metal pioneers can be forgiven for showing too much musical virtuosity, in this style that has been exercised extensively for decades this is not the case. Before you start unsheathing your broadswords, I'm not writing this to slag off True Metal at all. On the contrary, I'm merely using this angle to highlight just how good Steel Attack are here on their third opus "Predator of the Empire". That the 10 hymns are an adulation of Metal glories past need hardly be said, but it is done with flair and a keen sense of melody and inciting refrains. As long as there are bands like these, any pilgrims on the true path must not be to concerned.

No, it's even more that that; it's like worse than the worst! Frankly, don't expect synths, melodies or a 10000 bucks production. This is pure raw evil Black Metal! Some will think it's a commercial abomination and, objectively, they may be right, but still, this is the most authentic music I've ever heard, and I think it deserves at least to be mentioned. THE PROPHECY "Ashes" self-produced CD 80/100
Doom Metal
England

By now, I think you all know Morgion, Evoken and Mourning Beloveth. Well, soon we'll have to add another band at the foot of the list of the greatest Doom Metal bands that exist on our dear blue planet. And that name is The Prophecy. The particular thing here is that the guys have a tremendously great guitar playing, which is characterized by twin phrasings that follow nearly folkish themes. And that adds a lot of dynamics to the songs, even though we're still talking about Doom Metal, which of course implies great heaviness and slowness in order to keep the genre hundred percent authentic. Vocals are deep, sometimes harsh and growling and they add some more weight to the already crushing atmospheres. The use of synths is reduced to bare necessities and does not make the songs sound floppy. I was about to say that the sound could have been better but I was just thinking of some solo parts that would have been better if dubbed and that's nothing but a simple detail. As a matter of fact, the whole album sounds very nice and I wouldn't change anything...

TIERRA SANTA "Indomable" CD 75/100

There's something of a Spanish invasion going on I believe. Here I am going on how original Red Wine's concept is to sing in their native tongue and here is already the next Metal opera, entirely sung in Spanish. The fifth one even for this world-famous - in Spain that is - quartet.
From the looks of it, they have gotten quite good at this game too. In my opinion, this is one of few bands I know that might be able to stand out in the Spanish underground. Even though a title like "Las Walkirias" does sound a trifle too campy for its own good, there's no denying that Tierra Santa kicks ass. Sounding a bit like Saxon on tequila, it's head banging heaven from the first till the last note.

TUNGSTEN "The Abuse" CD 70/100
US Death Rock
USA

On a chemical level, scientists say tungsten is a transition metal. On a musical level, that same definition doesn't fit with the band Tungsten at all because my ears never betray me, so I can still tell the difference between a band looking for its own style and another that already found its way. And these guys from Louisiana undoubtedly know what they're doing, so the transitional step has definitely been taken. For a while I guess... I don't know if their style can be described as entirely original but the only influences I hear are just influences. See what I mean? This is not a band replaying another band's shit. Tungsten are no virtuosi, yet they came up with great riffs that are always coupled with a very special creepy feel that reminds me of Steve Sylvester's work (in the early Death SS period). Or even Danzig to name a more famous one. Sometimes, it gets a little Marilyn Mansonish as well, especially on certain tracks like "Who Are You?" for example. All in all, as you probably understood, these guys like to develop dark moods that drive you insane if you don't pay attention. And it fucking really works! With a title such as "The Abuse" I wasn't expecting anything "happy, happy, joy, joy!" but I thought it would harm less. If the latest Type O Negative didn't lead you to commit suicide, try this one... could be "good" for you!

V.A. "Atticus… Dragging The Lake II" CD 83/100
Punk Rock
U.S.A.

Most compilation albums have two purposes: give people the chance to get in touch with new bands and persuade them to buy the full albums of the artists on it. In order to do that, they make CDs with songs starring on the artist's full-length albums. I'm not saying this is wrong, on the contrary, it's rather normal, but let's face it: how many of you listen more than two or three times to these albums? Or even listen the whole album through without searching through songs or skipping songs? Well, Atticus, one of the newest "Punk Rock" clothing lines of the U.S. (owned by members of Blink 182) made one of these compilation albums that you stick into your stereo, and never take out again, as a manner of speech. With kind permission of almost every famous "Punk Rock" label, they released a 26-song compilation, with the bands' best songs. About more than 40% of the songs are unreleased and the others songs, well, let's say they used the catchiest ones. All genres are represented: Punk Rock with bands as Blink182, Slick Shoes, Lagwagon, Box Car Racer; Emo with Finch, Thrice, Further Seems Forever, Taking Back Sunday; Hardcore with H2O, Rise Against, Bane; Old School tainted music with Rocket From The Crypt, Transplants, Over My Dead Body; Ska with Mighty Mighty Bosstones… and then there's a live song of Alkaline Trio. And I can't forget to mention the other famous bands such as Hot Water Music, The Suicide Machines, Down By Law, and many others. 77 minutes of total pleasure. If I had to compose a compilation album myself, this is how it might sound.

V.A. "Smash-up Derby" CD 75/100
Punk'n'roll
U.S.A.

Oh yeah baby! Do you like Rock 'n' Roll? Do you like Punk Rock? Then you must love this Punk 'n' Roll compilation album. To be honest, I don't listen that much to this type of albums, but I do buy lots of them in order to get in touch with bands I never heard of before. That's true isn't it? How many of you have discovered new bands thanks to compilation albums? This "Smash-up Derby" aims at a particular genre, this so called Punk 'n' Roll. You'll find the usual and well known bands such as The Hives, New Bomb Turks, NRA, The Hellacopters, Puffball, The Donnas on one hand… and then you should keep an eye on bands like The Dragons, The Hypnomen and The Pattern on the other hand, which are bands I never heard of before, but left quite a nice aftertaste in my mouth. It's amazing how many bands choose a moniker that starts with "The". Maybe that's something common for this genre of music? It must be, isn't it? If you like to travel around the world of music, you'll be able to discover some tropical places no one heard of before…
